Code, Local Government § 1–708","heading":"","body":"(a) (1) Unless otherwise defined by local law, in this section, “cable\ntelevision system” means a nonbroadcast facility that consists of a set of transmission\npaths and associated signal generation, reception, and central equipment, under\ncommon ownership and control, that distributes or is designed to distribute to\nsubscribers the signals of one or more television broadcast stations.\n(2) “Cable television system” does not include a facility that:\n(i) serves 49 or fewer subscribers; or\n(ii) serves only subscribers in one or more multiple dwelling\nunits under common ownership, control, or management.\n(b) This section does not authorize the governing body of a county to enact\nlaws or regulations for a municipality.\n(c) The governing body of a county or municipality may:\n(1) grant a franchise for a cable television system that uses a public\nright–of–way;\n(2) impose franchise fees;\n(3) establish rates applicable to a franchise; and\n(4) adopt rules and regulations for the operation of a franchise.","path":["Article - Local Government"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=glg\u0026section=1-708","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T19:59:58Z","sha256":"d1c0424929dd7fb254c675a76ebf7dc7b8302a03bc389ad180ef994052978eb4","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-local-government-1-707","next":"us-md/md.-code-local-government-1-709"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
