Code, Local Government § 11–207","heading":"","body":"(a) In a civil infraction proceeding:\n(1) the court shall confirm that the defendant has received a copy of\nand understands the charges;\n(2) the defendant may enter a plea of guilty or not guilty;\n(3) the court shall apply the evidentiary standards provided by law\nfor the trial of a criminal case;\n(4) the defendant may:\n(i) cross–examine witnesses;\n(ii) produce evidence or witnesses on the defendant’s behalf;\n(iii) testify; and\n(iv) be represented by counsel of the defendant’s own choice\nand at the defendant’s expense; and\n(5) the burden of proof is the same as required by law in the trial of\na criminal case.\n(b) The court may:\n(1) enter a verdict of guilty or not guilty; or\n(2) before entering a verdict, place the defendant on probation in the\nsame manner as allowed in the trial of a criminal case.","path":["Article - Local Government"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=glg\u0026section=11-207","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T19:59:58Z","sha256":"8cc8fdeda79a9386b3fea02264f53732a5c6fb716e5fb905cb4c21984149496c","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-local-government-11-206","next":"us-md/md.-code-local-government-11-208"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
