Code, Local Government § 6–102","heading":"","body":"(a) (1) Unless State law classifies a violation as a criminal offense, the\nlegislative body of a municipality may provide, by law, that a violation of a municipal\nordinance is a municipal infraction.\n(2) A municipal infraction is a civil offense.\n(b) The legislative body of a municipality may classify as a municipal\ninfraction:\n(1) a violation of an ordinance or regulation concerning zoning or\nland use; and\n(2) littering in the municipality as prohibited under § 10–110 of the\nCriminal Law Article.\n(c) (1) A fine not exceeding $5,000 may be imposed for each municipal\ninfraction.\n(2) The fine is payable to the municipality by the person charged in\nthe citation within 20 calendar days of service of the citation.","path":["Article - Local Government"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=glg\u0026section=6-102","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T19:59:58Z","sha256":"2c97f8ee9b3ac63c4ed1a2489a5d668ffbd650fa2bd088ae9f4af3e078643654","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-local-government-6-101","next":"us-md/md.-code-local-government-6-103"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
