Code, Public Safety § 14–212","heading":"","body":"(a) Except by order of court in a proceeding affecting the right of possession, an action for eviction or distress may not be brought against a person in emergency management service or person suffering injury or damage if:\n(1) the rent for the premises does not exceed $150 per month; and\n(2) the premises are occupied for dwelling purposes by the spouse, children, or other dependents of the person in emergency management service or person suffering injury or damage.\n(b) (1) In a proceeding affecting the right of possession:\n(i) 1. on its own initiative the court may stay the proceeding for a period not exceeding 3 months; and\n2. subject to paragraph (2) of this subsection, on motion the court shall stay the proceeding for a period not exceeding 3 months; or\n(ii) the court may issue any other order.\n(2) The court need not stay the action if the court finds that the ability of a tenant to pay the agreed rent was not materially affected because the tenant was a person in emergency management service or person suffering injury or damage.","path":["Article - Public Safety"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=gps\u0026section=14-212","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T20:00:18Z","sha256":"94d152f0e0d629496bf4635a08c3f6449b55a076808a618df55bdbe57f10e947","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-public-safety-14-211","next":"us-md/md.-code-public-safety-14-213"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
