Code, Public Safety § 3–501","heading":"","body":"(a) In this section, “manufacturer” means a person who possesses a federal license to engage in the business of manufacturing firearms or ammunition for sale or distribution.\n(b) Except as provided in subsection (c) of this section, a law enforcement agency seeking to dispose of a handgun owned by the agency shall:\n(1) destroy the handgun;\n(2) sell, exchange, or transfer the handgun to another law enforcement agency for official use by that agency;\n(3) sell the handgun to a retired police employee in accordance with § 2–415(c) of this article;\n(4) sell the handgun to the law enforcement officer to whom the handgun was assigned; or\n(5) sell, exchange, or transfer the handgun to a manufacturer.\n(c) If a law enforcement officer is killed or dies in the performance of duty, a law enforcement agency may transfer the handgun of the deceased officer to the next of kin of the deceased officer, if the requirements of Title 5, Subtitle 1 of this article relating to firearms applications are met.","path":["Article - Public Safety"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=gps\u0026section=3-501","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T20:00:18Z","sha256":"e0588f67d244c0505bcaf47bec98ca6c610d3f50ec3dd74e50dc86282d38aa03","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-public-safety-3-415","next":"us-md/md.-code-public-safety-3-501.1"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
