Code, State Finance and Procurement § 5A–333","heading":"","body":"(a) In this part the following words have the meanings indicated.\n(b) “Archaeology Office” means the Archaeology Office established under § 5A-334 of this subtitle.\n(c) “Associated funerary objects” means objects that are reasonably believed to have been placed with individual human remains as a part of the death rite or ceremony of a culture.\n(d) (1) “Cave” has the meaning stated in § 5-1401 of the Natural Resources Article.\n(2) “Cave” includes:\n(i) any naturally occurring void, cavity, recess, cavern, sinkhole, grotto, rock shelter, or system of interconnecting passages beneath the surface of the earth or within a cliff or ledge; and\n(ii) natural subsurface water and drainage systems.\n(e) “Committee” means the Advisory Committee on Archaeology.\n(f) “Human remains” means any part of the body of a deceased human being in any state of decomposition.\n(g) “Native American” means an individual or a descendant of an individual who inhabited North America before European contact.\n(h) “Submerged archaeological historic property” means any underwater structure, remains, or object that:\n(1) yields or is likely to yield information significant to the study of human prehistory, history, or culture; and\n(2) (i) is so embedded in underwater land that excavating tools are needed to move the bottom sediments to reach all or part of it and has remained unclaimed for at least 100 years; or\n(ii) is included or is eligible to be included in the National Register of Historic Places.","path":["Article - State Finance and Procurement"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=gsf\u0026section=5A-333","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T20:00:48Z","sha256":"37caf9ca6f7a32d61d7ba1ec714306fdcd9d35be4b3df547ad6f3983ca195076","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-state-finance-and-procurement-5a-331","next":"us-md/md.-code-state-finance-and-procurement-5a-334"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
