Code, State Personnel and Pensions § 7–402","heading":"","body":"(a) Each employee subject to this subtitle is required to complete a 6-month probationary period as the final step in:\n(1) the employee's initial appointment to a position in the State Personnel Management System;\n(2) the employee's appointment to a position in the skilled or professional service following a competitive promotion; and\n(3) except as provided in subsection (b) of this section, the employee’s appointment to a position in the skilled or professional service following a reinstatement.\n(b) An employee is not required to serve a probationary period if the employee is reinstated within 1 year after the employee’s separation from State service to a classification in which the employee had previously completed a probationary period.\n(c) To successfully complete a probationary period, an employee is required to demonstrate proficiency in the assigned duties and responsibilities of the position to which the employee is appointed.","path":["Article - State Personnel and Pensions"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=gsp\u0026section=7-402","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T20:01:07Z","sha256":"954d5c99454d29b04bd4321a8dba7c3d4a8c322a8633eaa6921d71cc5cf6ac13","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-state-personnel-and-pensions-7-401","next":"us-md/md.-code-state-personnel-and-pensions-7-403"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
