Code, Transportation § 11–117.1","heading":"","body":"(a) “Electric bicycle” means a vehicle that:\n(1) Is designed to be operated by human power with the assistance of an electric motor;\n(2) Is equipped with fully operable pedals;\n(3) Has two or three wheels;\n(4) Has a motor with a rating of 750 watts or less; and\n(5) Meets one of the requirements of subsection (b) of this section.\n(b) (1) A Class 1 electric bicycle is equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling and ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches a speed of 20 miles per hour.\n(2) A Class 2 electric bicycle is equipped with a motor that provides assistance whether or not the rider is pedaling the bicycle and ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches a speed of 20 miles per hour.\n(3) A Class 3 electric bicycle is equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling and ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches a speed of 28 miles per hour.","path":["Article - Transportation"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=gtr\u0026section=11-117.1","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T20:01:38Z","sha256":"ea7c10e1517e654b9b862e24321c3948a4ea612eaaf73bb82a2049760a4aea24","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-transportation-11-117","next":"us-md/md.-code-transportation-11-117.2"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
