Code, Transportation § 21–1416","heading":"","body":"(a) (1) In this section the following words have the meanings indicated.\n(2) “Authority” means the Maryland Transportation Authority.\n(3) “E–ZPass account” means a financial relationship between the Authority and a person who agrees to abide by the terms and conditions established for the electronic collection of tolls.\n(4) “Transponder” means a device that is designed to transmit information used to collect tolls and is associated with a particular account.\n(b) A holder of an E–ZPass account may:\n(1) Report a theft of a transponder associated with the E–ZPass account to a local law enforcement agency and the Authority within 2 weeks of the first account statement after the theft; and\n(2) Identify any unauthorized charges to the holder’s E–ZPass account and report the unauthorized charges to the Authority for verification.\n(c) A holder of an E–ZPass account who reports the theft of a transponder in accordance with this section is not responsible for unauthorized toll charges:\n(1) If the Authority:\n(i) Identifies the individual who unlawfully used the transponder; and\n(ii) Collects the proper toll charges from the individual; or\n(2) Incurred after the date the theft was reported to the Authority.","path":["Article - Transportation"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=gtr\u0026section=21-1416","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T20:01:38Z","sha256":"62406a89d95a3f9f21b06ce4104b49911f618a65a83e55ce3ef20f1dbd8852d4","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-transportation-21-1415","next":"us-md/md.-code-transportation-21-1417"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
