Code, Transportation § 21–701","heading":"","body":"(a) (1) If the driver of a vehicle approaches a railroad grade crossing under any of the circumstances stated in paragraph (2) of this subsection, the driver:\n(i) Shall stop within 50 feet but not less than 15 feet from the nearest rail in the crossing; and\n(ii) May not proceed until he can do so safely.\n(2) The requirements of this subsection apply if:\n(i) A clearly visible electric or mechanical signal device warns of the immediate approach or passage of a railroad train;\n(ii) A crossing gate is lowered;\n(iii) A flagman signals the approach or passage of a railroad train;\n(iv) A railroad train approaching within 1,500 feet of the crossing gives a signal audible to traffic approaching the crossing and the railroad train, because of its speed or nearness to the crossing, is an immediate danger; or\n(v) A railroad train is plainly visible and is in or is approaching dangerously near to the crossing.\n(b) A person may not drive any vehicle through, around, or under any crossing gate or barrier at a railroad grade crossing while the gate or barrier is closed or is being opened or closed.","path":["Article - Transportation"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=gtr\u0026section=21-701","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T20:01:38Z","sha256":"9f7458135bf2e272c37dec2ac6f79a997f4f673fba9c4289f0cbe95468aa72dd","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-transportation-21-606","next":"us-md/md.-code-transportation-21-702"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
