Laws § 333.21571","heading":"Rural hospital; eligibility requirements; definition.","body":"Sec. 21571.\n\n(1) To be a rural hospital and qualify as an eligible hospital under the federal medicare rural hospital flexibility program, 42 USC 1395i-4, a hospital not located outside of a metropolitan statistical area as defined in 42 USC 1395ww shall be located in a city, village, or township with a population of no more than 12,000 and in a county with a population of no more than 110,000. Population is to be determined according to the official 2000 federal decennial census.\n\n(2) A hospital that is determined to be a rural hospital under this section may be designated by the department as a critical provider to satisfy the eligibility requirements for certification as a critical access hospital.\n\n(3) As used in this section, \"rural hospital\" means a hospital that is located outside of a metropolitan statistical area as defined in 42 USC 1395ww or that satisfies the criteria established under subsection (1).","path":["MI Code","Chapter 333","Act Act-368-of-1978"],"source_url":"https://www.legislature.mi.gov/Laws/MCL?objectName=mcl-333-21571","current_through":"2026-08-14","vintage":"open-us-law v2026.08, retrieved 2026-09-14","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T18:32:31Z","sha256":"758e677f5e761ac45b3c2cb3664ddd74879ccd2e4733183a537e1a65e9127dd0","source_id":"us-mi","stale":false,"prev":"us-mi/mich.-comp.-laws-333.21568","next":"us-mi/mich.-comp.-laws-333.21601"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
