Laws § 380.1151","heading":"English as basic language of instruction; exceptions.","body":"Sec. 1151.\n\nEnglish shall be the basic language of instruction in the public and nonpublic schools of this state and in state institutions.\n\nSubsection (1) shall not be construed as applying to:\n\nReligious instruction in a nonpublic school given in a foreign language in addition to the regular course of study.\n\nA course of instruction in a foreign language in which the pupil acquires sufficient proficiency to be conversant in the foreign language.\n\nBilingual instruction, as defined in section 1152, which will assist children of limited English-speaking ability to achieve reasonable efficiency in the English language.","path":["MI Code","Chapter 380","Act Act-451-of-1976"],"source_url":"https://www.legislature.mi.gov/Laws/MCL?objectName=mcl-380-1151","current_through":"2026-08-14","vintage":"open-us-law v2026.08, retrieved 2026-09-14","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T18:32:31Z","sha256":"18e3077b08fe725c4d284be8cd21bbdd04215fb9a5c3dd7cb3145c05b45c5985","source_id":"us-mi","stale":false,"prev":"us-mi/mich.-comp.-laws-380.1148a","next":"us-mi/mich.-comp.-laws-380.1152"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
