Laws § 750.540a","heading":"Party line, emergency, defined; refusal to yield or surrender use of line; pretext; penalty.","body":"Sec. 540a.\n\n\"Party line\" as used in this section means a subscribers' line telephone circuit, consisting of 2 or more main telephone stations connected therewith, each station with a distinctive ring or telephone number. \"Emergency\" as used in this section means a situation in which property or human life are in jeopardy and the prompt summoning of aid is essential.\n\nAny person who shall wilfully refuse to yield or surrender the use of a party line to another person for the purpose of permitting such other person to report a fire or summon police, medical or other aid in case of emergency, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor.\n\nAny person who shall ask for or request the use of a party line on pretext that an emergency exists, knowing that no emergency in fact exists, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor.","path":["MI Code","Chapter 750","Act Act-328-of-1931"],"source_url":"https://www.legislature.mi.gov/Laws/MCL?objectName=mcl-750-540a","current_through":"2026-08-14","vintage":"open-us-law v2026.08, retrieved 2026-09-14","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T18:32:31Z","sha256":"e5fe180be5905232da2c493ea86816959f34e7199c33c9f1c2588416b1ebc61d","source_id":"us-mi","stale":false,"prev":"us-mi/mich.-comp.-laws-750.540","next":"us-mi/mich.-comp.-laws-750.540b"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
