Stat. § 18A:12-1","heading":"Qualifications.","body":"Each member of any board of education shall be a citizen and resident of the district, or of such constituent district of a consolidated or regional district as may be required by law, and shall have been such for at least one year immediately preceding his appointment or election, he shall be able to read and write, shall be registered to vote in the district, and, notwithstanding the provisions of N.J.S.2C:51-1 or any other law to the contrary, he is not disqualified as a voter pursuant to R.S.19:4-1 and has not been convicted of:\nany crime of the first or second degree;\nan offense as set forth in chapter 14 of Title 2C of the New Jersey Statutes, or as set forth in N.J.S.2C:24-4 and 2C:24-7, or as set forth in R.S.9:6-1 et seq., or as set forth in N.J.S.2C:29-2;\nan offense involving the manufacture, transportation, sale, possession, distribution or habitual use of a \"controlled dangerous substance\" as defined in the \"Comprehensive Drug Reform Act of 1987,\" N.J.S.2C:35-1 et al. or \"drug paraphernalia\" as defined pursuant to N.J.S.2C:36-1 et seq.;\na crime involving the use of force or the threat of force to or upon a person or property including, but not limited to, robbery, aggravated assault, stalking, kidnapping, arson, manslaughter and murder;\na crime as set forth in chapter 39 of Title 2C of the New Jersey Statutes, a third degree crime as set forth in chapter 20 of Title 2C of the New Jersey Statutes, or a crime as listed below:\nRecklessly endangering another person\t N.J.S.2C:12-2\nTerroristic threats\t\t\t\t\tN.J.S.2C:12-3\nCriminal restraint\t\t\t\t\tN.J.S.2C:13-2\nLuring, enticing child into motor vehicle,\nstructure or isolated area\t\t\t\tP.L.1993, c.291 (C.2C:13-6)\nCausing or risking widespread injury\nor damage\t\t\t\t\t\tN.J.S.2C:17-2\nCriminal mischief\t\t\t\t\tN.J.S.2C:17-3\nBurglary\t\t\t\t\t\tN.J.S.2C:18-2\nUsury\t\t\t\t\t\t\tN.J.S.2C:21-19\nThreats and other improper influence\t\tN.J.S.2C:27-3 Perjury and false swearing\t\t\t\tN.J.S.2C:28-3\nResisting arrest\t\t\t\t\tN.J.S.2C:29-2\nEscape\t\t\t\t\t\t\tN.J.S.2C:29-5\nBias intimidation\t\t\t\t\tN.J.S.2C:16-1;\nany crime of the fourth degree involving a victim who is a minor; or\nconspiracy to commit or an attempt to commit any of the aforesaid crimes.\nFor the purposes of this section, a conviction exists if the individual has been convicted, at any time, under the laws of this State or under any similar statutes of the United States or any other state for a substantially equivalent crime or other offense.\namended 1986, c.98, s.1; 1987, c.328, s.1; 2011, c.72, s.1.","path":["TITLE 18A EDUCATION"],"source_url":"https://pub.njleg.state.nj.us/statutes/STATUTES-TEXT.zip","current_through":"P.L.2025, c.405, and J.R.22","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T17:54:13Z","sha256":"931eda529d6067d6c455b4513d4c977c669a248db37b40831e7d7d4823c2f7ff","source_id":"us-nj","stale":true,"prev":"us-nj/n.j.-stat.-18a-11-15","next":"us-nj/n.j.-stat.-18a-12-1.1"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
