Each veteran holding permanent or provisional office, position or employment on June 26, 1962, not covered by the retirement system established under chapter 37 of the laws of 1955, with a board of education or school district in a county in which there exists a pension fund established under article 16 of chapter 5 of Title 18 of the Revised Statutes, shall become a member of said pension fund as of June 26, 1962; and each veteran thereafter commencing service in such office, position or employment shall become a member  of said pension fund as of the date of the commencement of said service.\nb.
