Stat. § 26:2H-12.62","heading":"Definitions relative to qualifications for employment as surgical technologist.","body":"1.\tFor purposes of this act:\n\"Health care facility\" means a hospital or other health care facility licensed pursuant to P.L.1971, c.136 (C.26:2H-1 et seq.).\n\"Surgical technologist\" means a person who is authorized to practice surgical technology pursuant to the provisions of this act.\n\"Surgical technology\" means surgical patient care that includes, but is not limited to, the following tasks or functions:\n(1)\tpreparing the operating room for surgical procedures by ensuring that surgical equipment is functioning properly and safely;\n(2)\tpreparing the operating room and the sterile field for surgical procedures by preparing sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment using sterile technique;\n(3)\tanticipating the needs of the surgical team based on knowledge of human anatomy and pathophysiology and how they relate to the surgical patient and the patient's surgical procedure; and\n(4)\tas directed, performing tasks at the sterile field including:\n(a)\tpassing supplies, equipment or instruments;\n(b)\tsponging or suctioning an operative site;\n(c)\tpreparing and cutting suture material;\n(d)\ttransferring and irrigating with fluids;\n(e)\ttransferring and administering drugs within the sterile field, according to applicable law;\n(f)\thandling specimens;\n(g)\tholding retractors and other instruments;\n(h)\tapplying electrocautery to clamps on bleeders;\n(i)\tconnecting drains to suction apparatus;\n(j)\tapplying dressings to closed wounds; and\n(k)\tperforming sponge, needle, supply and instrument counts with the registered nurse circulator.\nL.2011, c.148, s.1.","path":["TITLE 26 HEALTH AND VITAL STATISTICS"],"source_url":"https://pub.njleg.state.nj.us/statutes/STATUTES-TEXT.zip","current_through":"P.L.2025, c.405, and J.R.22","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T17:54:13Z","sha256":"bb807d88ed782cf23a541edeced963abc1c409048ae83e93fcb9012eb59d9339","source_id":"us-nj","stale":true,"prev":"us-nj/n.j.-stat.-26-2h-12.61","next":"us-nj/n.j.-stat.-26-2h-12.63"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
