The retirement accounts, pensions, disability benefits, and veterans’ benefits of veterans, service members, and military spouses shall be exempt from creditor claims.\nb.\tMotor vehicles owned by veterans, service members, and military spouses shall be exempt from creditor claims up to a fair market value of $30,000, not to exceed one vehicle per household.\nc.\tSubsection b. of this section shall not apply to:\n(1)\tvoluntary liens placed upon the motor vehicle;\n(2)\ttaxes, assessments, or obligations owed to federal, State, or local government\nentities; and\n(3)\tjudgments arising from willful misconduct, fraud, or criminal activity of the debtor.\nd.\tAs used in this section, “motor vehicle” shall mean the same as defined pursuant to R.S.39:1-1.\nL.2025, c.326, s.5.","path":["TITLE 2A ADMINISTRATION OF CIVIL AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE"],"source_url":"https://pub.njleg.state.nj.us/statutes/STATUTES-TEXT.zip","current_through":"P.L.2025, c.405, and J.R.22","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T17:54:13Z","sha256":"8f11ed0a83f850f8e3161452ea22d812bf36b6f3a3dd27fe783c2ed0d6ebedf4","source_id":"us-nj","stale":true,"prev":"us-nj/n.j.-stat.-2a-17-17.4","next":"us-nj/n.j.-stat.-2a-17-17.6"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
