A person who purposely or knowingly violates a provision of chapter 10 of Title 39 of the Revised Statutes, for which a specific penalty is not provided in that chapter or this section, shall be guilty of a crime of the fourth degree.\nb.\tA person who purposely or knowingly commits the following violations of chapter 10 of Title 39 of the Revised Statutes shall be guilty of a crime of the third degree:\n(1)\tMakes a misrepresentation or false statement in any title papers or other papers submitted to the Chief Administrator of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission in connection therewith;\n(2)\tPurchases, receives or obtains a motor vehicle on a title paper in violation of chapter 10 of Title 39 of the Revised Statutes;\n(3)\tForges, changes or counterfeits a part of title papers;\n(4)\tMisrepresents a number placed on a motor vehicle by the manufacturer, or in any other manner misrepresents the description of a motor vehicle; or\n(5)\tUses title papers on or for a wrong motor vehicle, with intent to evade or violate the requirements of chapter 10 of Title 39 of the Revised Statutes.\nL.2003,c.217,s.2.","path":["TITLE 2C THE NEW JERSEY CODE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE"],"source_url":"https://pub.njleg.state.nj.us/statutes/STATUTES-TEXT.zip","current_through":"P.L.2025, c.405, and J.R.22","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T17:54:13Z","sha256":"8cc7a1488ecc51bca8b9071ad6c315040418a1c608055f43193a55be7b30ba9a","source_id":"us-nj","stale":true,"prev":"us-nj/n.j.-stat.-2c-21-4.7","next":"us-nj/n.j.-stat.-2c-21-4.9"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
