Stat. § 39:4-86","heading":"Overtaking and passing vehicles;  crossing  \"No Passing\" lines","body":"The driver of a vehicle shall not drive to the left side of the center line  of a highway in overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same  direction unless the left side is clearly visible and free of oncoming traffic  for a sufficient distance ahead to permit the overtaking and passing to be made  in safety.\nThe driver of a vehicle shall not drive to the left of the center of a highway in order to overtake and pass another vehicle proceeding in the same direction upon the crest of a grade or upon a curve in the highway where the driver's view along the highway is obstructed within a distance of five hundred  feet.\nExcept when otherwise directed by a duly constituted traffic or police officer or when the lane in which he is operating is obstructed and impassable,  the driver of a vehicle shall not cross an appropriately marked \"No Passing\"  line in a  \"No Passing\"  zone duly established pursuant to a duly promulgated  regulation of the State Highway Commissioner or an ordinance or resolution duly  adopted by a municipal governing body or a board of chosen freeholders,  whichever has jurisdiction over the highway.\nAmended by L.1948, c. 170, p. 912, s. 3;  L.1951, c. 23, p. 82, s. 46.","path":["TITLE 39 MOTOR VEHICLES AND TRAFFIC REGULATION"],"source_url":"https://pub.njleg.state.nj.us/statutes/STATUTES-TEXT.zip","current_through":"P.L.2025, c.405, and J.R.22","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T17:54:13Z","sha256":"f5b4ea4f8ae4d3b211a27ec48bb2671f7bee66ee23e74deab796a2911b7d5c2e","source_id":"us-nj","stale":true,"prev":"us-nj/n.j.-stat.-39-4-85.1","next":"us-nj/n.j.-stat.-39-4-87"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
