{"data":{"id":"us-nm/1-22-2","jurisdiction":"us-nm","citation":"1-22-2","heading":"Definitions.","body":"As used in the Local Election Act:\nA. \"local election\" means a local government election;\nB. \"local governing body\" means a board, council or commission, as appropriate for a given local government;\nC. \"local government\" means a:\n(1) political subdivision of the state with authority to levy taxes pursuant to Article 8, Section 9 of the constitution of New Mexico and its enabling legislation, but does not include a county or a conservancy district created and organized pursuant to The Conservancy Act of New Mexico [73-14-1 NMSA 1978]; and\n(2) political subdivision of the state without authority to levy taxes pursuant to Article 8, Section 9 of the constitution of New Mexico or its enabling legislation, but whose statutory provisions provide for election of officers or ballot questions to be decided pursuant to the Local Election Act;\nD. \"municipal officers\" means the local governing body and any elective executive and judicial officers of a municipality;\nE. \"regular local election\" means the biennial local election at which local governing body members are elected pursuant to the provisions of the Local Election Act; and\nF. \"special local election\" means a local election conducted at a time other than a statewide election at which only ballot questions are considered pursuant to the provisions of the Special Election Act [Chapter 1, Article 24 NMSA 1978].","path":["Chapter 1 - Elections","ARTICLE 22 Local Elections"],"source_url":"https://nmonesource.com/nmos/nmsa-unanno/en/item/18502/index.do","current_through":"2026-05-20","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-03T15:02:19Z","sha256":"b96e3bd595a92eb744d4c1cd97e463682eae79d025fd2e004d2f12c9d572e8a2","source_id":"us-nm","stale":false,"prev":"us-nm/1-22-1","next":"us-nm/1-22-3"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
