Code § BC 1408","heading":"Section BC 1408: Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS)","body":"1408.1 General.\n\nThe provisions of this section shall govern the materials, construction and quality of exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS) for use as exterior wall coverings in addition to other applicable requirements of Chapters 7, 14, 16, 17 and 26.\n\n1408.1.1 Prohibited locations.\n\nThe use of EIFS containing foam plastic insulation in exterior wall coverings is subject to the following limitations:\n\n1. EIFS containing foam plastic insulation is prohibited in exterior wall coverings in Type IV construction utilizing cross-laminated timer (CLT) or structural composite lumber (SCL) complying with Section 602.4.\n\n2. EIFS containing foam plastic insulation is prohibited in exterior wall coverings at exterior balconies in accordance with Section 1406.3.\n\n1408.2 Performance characteristics.\n\nEIFS shall be constructed such that it meets the performance characteristics required in ASTM E 2568.\n\n1408.3 Structural design.\n\nThe underlying structural framing and substrate shall be designed and constructed to resist loads as required by Chapter 16.\n\n1408.4 Weather resistance.\n\nEIFS shall comply with Section 1403 and shall be designed and constructed to resist environmental conditions in accordance with this section, the approved construction documents and manufacturer's installation instructions.\n\n1408.4.1 EIFS with drainage.\n\nEIFS with drainage shall have an average minimum drainage efficiency of 90 percent when tested in accordance the requirements of ASTM E 2273 and is required on framed walls of Type V construction, Residential Group R occupancies.\n\n1408.4.1.1 Water-resistive barrier.\n\nFor EIFS with drainage, the water-resistive barrier shall comply with Section 1404.2 of this code or ASTM E 2570.\n\n1408.5 Installation.\n\nInstallation of the EIFS and EIFS with drainage shall be in accordance with the EIFS manufacturer's instructions and this section.\n\n1408.6 Special inspections.\n\nEIFS installations shall comply with the provisions of Chapter 17.\n\n1408.7 Fireblocking.\n\nEIFS installations containing foam plastic insulation shall be fireblocked in accordance with Section 718.2.6.1.\n\n1408.8 Foam plastic insulation.\n\nEIFS installations containing foam plastic insulation shall be tested and comply with the requirements of Section 2603.\n\n1408.9 Thermal barrier.\n\nEIFS installations containing foam plastic insulation shall be separated from the interior of a building in accordance with Section 2603.5.2.","path":["New York City Administrative Code","Title 28","Chapter 7: New York City Building Code"],"source_url":"https://files.amlegal.com/pdffiles/NewYorkCity/Admin/XML.zip","current_through":"Local Law 2026/135 (enacted August 31, 2026)","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-06T02:48:57Z","sha256":"c0e1b60d989f1cd3e6e9e3cb1401c0022c0507a4ead0182f08bdf8d02b220721","source_id":"us-nyc","stale":false,"prev":"us-nyc/n.y.c.-admin.-code-bc-1407","next":"us-nyc/n.y.c.-admin.-code-bc-1409"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
