Code § BC 3004","heading":"Section BC 3004: Conveying Systems","body":"3004.1 General.\n\nEscalators, moving walks, conveyors, and amusement devices shall comply with the provisions of Sections 3004.2 through 3004.5 as applicable.\n\n3004.2 Escalators and moving walks.\n\nEscalators and moving walks shall be constructed of approved noncombustible and fire-retardant materials. This requirement shall not apply to electrical equipment, wiring, wheels, handrails and the use of 1/28-inch (0.9 mm) wood veneers on balustrades backed up with noncombustible materials.\n\n3004.2.1 Enclosure.\n\nEscalator floor openings shall be enclosed with shaft enclosures complying with Section 713.\n\n3004.2.2 Escalators.\n\nWhere provided in below-grade transportation stations, escalators shall have a clear width of not less than 32 inches (813 mm).\n\nException: The clear width is not required in existing facilities undergoing alterations.\n\n3004.3 Conveyors.\n\nConveyors and conveying systems shall comply with ASME B20.1.\n\n3004.3.1 Enclosure.\n\nConveyors and related equipment connecting successive floors or levels shall be enclosed with shaft enclosures complying with Section 713.\n\n3004.3.2 Conveyor safeties.\n\nPower-operated conveyors, belts and other material-moving devices shall be equipped with automatic limit switches that will shut off the power in an emergency and automatically stop all operation of the device.\n\n3004.4 Reserved.\n\n3004.5 Amusement devices.\n\nAmusement devices shall comply with rules of the department.","path":["New York City Administrative Code","Title 28","Chapter 7: New York City Building Code"],"source_url":"https://files.amlegal.com/pdffiles/NewYorkCity/Admin/XML.zip","current_through":"Local Law 2026/135 (enacted August 31, 2026)","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-06T02:48:57Z","sha256":"32dd8b3c38bb0a8267fec4421545c9497be1fe1a7bd36fa3fc48ac83bd86580b","source_id":"us-nyc","stale":false,"prev":"us-nyc/n.y.c.-admin.-code-bc-3003","next":"us-nyc/n.y.c.-admin.-code-bc-3005"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
