Code § BC 311","heading":"Section BC 311: Storage Group S","body":"311.1 Storage Group S.\n\nStorage Group S occupancy includes, among others, the use of a building or structure, or a portion thereof, for storage, such as for warehouses, storage rooms, freight depots and distribution centers, when not classified as a hazardous occupancy.\n\n311.1.1 Accessory storage spaces.\n\nA room or space used for storage purposes that is less than 100 square feet (9.3 m\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t) in area and accessory to another occupancy shall be classified as part of that occupancy. The aggregate area of such rooms or spaces shall not exceed the allowable area limits of Section 508.2.3.\n\n311.2 Moderate-hazard storage, Group S-1.\n\nStorage Group S-1 occupancies are buildings occupied for storing any flammable or combustible materials that are likely to permit the development and production of fire with moderate rapidity including, but not limited to, storage of the following:\n\nAerosols, Levels 2 and 3\n\nAircraft hangar (storage and repair)\n\nBags; cloth, burlap and paper\n\nBamboos and rattan\n\nBaskets\n\nBelting; canvas and leather\n\nBooks and paper in rolls or packs\n\nBoots and shoes\n\nButtons, including cloth covered, pearl or bone\n\nCardboard and cardboard boxes\n\nClothing, woolen wearing apparel\n\nCordage\n\nDry boat storage (indoor, not accessory to Group R)\n\nFurniture\n\nFurs\n\nGlues, mucilage, pastes and size\n\nGrains\n\nHorns and combs, other than celluloid\n\nLeather\n\nLinoleum\n\nLumber\n\nPhoto engravings\n\nResilient flooring\n\nSilks\n\nSoaps\n\nSugar\n\nTires, bulk storage of\n\nTobacco, cigars, cigarettes and snuff\n\nUpholstery and mattresses\n\nWax candles\n\n311.3 Low-hazard storage, Group S-2.\n\nStorage Group S-2 occupancies include, among others, buildings used for the storage of noncombustible materials such as products on wood pallets or in paper cartons with or without single thickness divisions; or in paper wrappings. Such products are permitted to have a negligible amount of plastic trim, such as knobs, handles or film wrapping. Group S-2 storage uses shall include, but not be limited to, storage of the following:\n\nAsbestos\n\nBeverages up to and including 16-percent alcohol in metal, glass or ceramic containers\n\nCement in bags\n\nChalk and crayons\n\nDairy products in nonwaxed coated paper containers\n\nDry cell batteries\n\nElectrical coils\n\nElectrical motors\n\nEmpty cans\n\nFood products\n\nFoods in noncombustible containers\n\nFresh fruits and vegetables in nonplastic trays or containers\n\nFrozen foods\n\nGlass\n\nGlass bottles, empty or filled with noncombustible liquids\n\nGypsum board\n\nInert pigments\n\nIvory\n\nMeats\n\nMetal cabinets\n\nMetal desks with plastic tops and trim\n\nMetal parts\n\nMetals\n\nMirrors\n\nOil-filled and other types of distribution transformers\n\nParking garages, open or enclosed\n\nPorcelain and pottery\n\nStoves\n\nTalc and soapstones\n\nWashers and dryers","path":["New York City Administrative Code","Title 28","Chapter 7: New York City Building Code"],"source_url":"https://files.amlegal.com/pdffiles/NewYorkCity/Admin/XML.zip","current_through":"Local Law 2026/135 (enacted August 31, 2026)","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-06T02:48:57Z","sha256":"4e4f361586423ae7388135ef0fb22bc362e2427d27acf2f46202995c1a7efb61","source_id":"us-nyc","stale":false,"prev":"us-nyc/n.y.c.-admin.-code-bc-310","next":"us-nyc/n.y.c.-admin.-code-bc-312"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
