Code § FC 3501","heading":"Section FC 3501: General","body":"3501.1 Scope.\n\nThis chapter shall govern welding, cutting and other torch and hot work operations and equipment.\n\n3501.2 Permits.\n\nPermits shall be required as set forth in FC 105.6.\n\n3501.3 Approved locations.\n\nHot work shall be conducted only in the areas set forth in this section or approved by the commissioner.\n\n3501.3.1 Authorized areas.\n\nHot work may be conducted in the following areas:\n\n1. Areas designed for hot work operations.\n\n2. Areas authorized for that purpose by the responsible person at the premises when precautions have been taken in compliance with the requirements of this chapter.\n\n3501.3.2 Restricted areas.\n\nHot work shall not be conducted in the following areas unless approval has been obtained from the commissioner:\n\n1. Areas where the sprinkler system is impaired.\n\n2. Areas where there exists the potential of an explosive atmosphere, such as locations where flammable gases, liquids or vapors are present.\n\n3. Areas with readily ignitable materials, such as storage of large quantities of bulk sulfur, baled paper, cotton, lint, dust or loose combustible materials.\n\n4. On board marine vessels or watercraft at dock under construction or repair.\n\n3501.4 Containers.\n\nCompressed gas containers shall be designed, installed, operated and maintained in accordance with this chapter and FC Chapter 53.\n\n3501.5 Design and installation of oxygen-fuel gas systems.\n\nAn oxygen-fuel gas system shall be designed and installed in accordance with NFPA 51.\n\n3501.5.1 Oxygen at construction sites.\n\nThe storage and use of oxygen at a construction site shall additionally comply with the requirements of FC Chapter 33.\n\n3501.6 Torches.\n\nTorches and tips that utilize a flammable gas for hot work operations shall be listed.\n\n3501.7 Certificate of approval.\n\nDevices used to increase the pressure of piped natural gas in accordance with FC 3509.8 shall be of a type for which a certificate of approval has been issued.","path":["New York City Administrative Code","Title 29","Chapter 2: New York City Fire Code"],"source_url":"https://files.amlegal.com/pdffiles/NewYorkCity/Admin/XML.zip","current_through":"Local Law 2026/135 (enacted August 31, 2026)","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-06T02:48:57Z","sha256":"688705a58d2a02d51ab59932d548ae25a198a1964c2ae2aa5528de03c06dfd3b","source_id":"us-nyc","stale":true,"prev":"us-nyc/n.y.c.-admin.-code-fc-3409","next":"us-nyc/n.y.c.-admin.-code-fc-3502"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
