Code § FC 801","heading":"Section FC 801: General","body":"801.1 Scope.\n\nThis chapter shall govern furnishings, decorative vegetation, decorations and scenery in buildings and structures.\n\n801.2 General.\n\nThe furnishings, decorative vegetation, decorations and scenery governed by this chapter shall be designed, stored, handled and used in accordance with this chapter.\n\n801.3 Flame-retardant treatments.\n\nWhen a material or item is treated with a flame-retardant chemical to meet the requirements of this chapter for a flame-resistant material, such chemical and its method of application shall be approved. Flame-retardant treatments shall be maintained so as to retain the effectiveness of the treatment under conditions encountered in actual use.\n\n801.4 Fire-retardant coating.\n\nWhen a material or item is coated with a fire-retardant coating to meet the requirements of this chapter for a flame-resistant material, such coating and its method of application shall be approved. Flame-retardant coatings shall be maintained so as to retain the effectiveness of the coating under conditions encountered in actual use.\n\n801.5 Prohibited decorative vegetation, decorations and scenery.\n\nIt shall be unlawful in Group A, E and I occupancies to store or use decorative vegetation, decorations or scenery that consists of or is coated with pyroxylin or similarly hazardous base.\n\n801.6 Obstructions.\n\nThe required width of any portion of a means of egress shall not be obstructed by any furnishing, decorative vegetation, decoration or scenery nor shall such furnishing, decorative vegetation, decoration or scenery obstruct any exit or the visibility thereof.\n\n801.7 Supervision.\n\nCompliance with flame resistance standards shall be under the supervision of a certificate of fitness holder in accordance with FC 801.7.1 and 801.7.2.\n\n801.7.1. Application of flame-retardant chemical.\n\nWhen a material or item is treated with a flame-retardant chemical to meet the requirements of this chapter for a flame-resistant material, the application of the chemical shall be conducted by or under the personal supervision of a certificate of fitness holder.\n\n801.7.2 Certification of compliance.\n\nCertification of compliance with the requirements of this section shall be prepared by a certificate of fitness holder and made available to department representatives in accordance with the rules or upon request of any department representative, provided, however, that a manufacturer's certification, in a form acceptable to the department, may be presented for an article that is inherently flame-resistant.\n\n801.8 Certificate of approval.\n\nAny flame-retardant chemical used to render a material flame-resistant to meet the requirements of this chapter shall be of a type for which a certificate of approval has been issued in accordance with FC 112 and the rules.","path":["New York City Administrative Code","Title 29","Chapter 2: New York City Fire Code"],"source_url":"https://files.amlegal.com/pdffiles/NewYorkCity/Admin/XML.zip","current_through":"Local Law 2026/135 (enacted August 31, 2026)","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-06T02:48:57Z","sha256":"6e12ea01c1b2dee4726961fa75e9a31cdd7b2689bd2c838de3f0b703d3070609","source_id":"us-nyc","stale":true,"prev":"us-nyc/n.y.c.-admin.-code-fc-704","next":"us-nyc/n.y.c.-admin.-code-fc-802"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
