Code § FGC 601","heading":"Section FGC 601: General","body":"601.1 Scope.\n\nThis chapter shall govern the approval, design, installation, construction, maintenance, alteration and repair of the appliances and equipment specifically identified herein. The approval, design, installation, construction, maintenance, alteration and repair of non gas-fired appliances shall be regulated by the New York City Mechanical Code.\n\n601.2 Fireplaces.\n\nFireplaces (solid fuel type or ANSI Z21.50/CSA 2.22) shall be installed with tight fitting noncombustible fireplace doors to control infiltration losses in construction type listed here:\n\n1. Masonry or factory-built fireplaces designed to allow an open burn.\n\n2. Whenever a decorative appliance (ANSI Standard Z21.60/CSA 2.26 gas-log style unit) is installed in a vented solid fuel fireplace.\n\n3. Vented decorative gas fireplace appliances (ANSI Standard Z21.50/CSA 2.22 units).\n\nFireplaces shall be provided with a source of combustion air as required by the fireplace construction provisions of the New York City Building Code.\n\n601.3 Flame safeguard device.\n\nAll fuel gas space heating appliances installed or used in a building occupied as a residence shall be equipped with an automatic flame safeguard device that shall shut off the fuel supply to the main burner or group of burners when the flame or pilot light thereof is extinguished.","path":["New York City Administrative Code","Title 28","Chapter 9: New York City Fuel Gas Code"],"source_url":"https://files.amlegal.com/pdffiles/NewYorkCity/Admin/XML.zip","current_through":"Local Law 2026/135 (enacted August 31, 2026)","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-06T02:48:57Z","sha256":"135314f3dad74381aa95de32628b1266fa16aada70362bcdfe6a17b49b00ec77","source_id":"us-nyc","stale":false,"prev":"us-nyc/n.y.c.-admin.-code-fgc-508","next":"us-nyc/n.y.c.-admin.-code-fgc-602"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
