Code § MC 1101","heading":"Section MC 1101: General","body":"1101.1 Scope.\n\nThis chapter shall govern the design, installation, construction, alteration and repair of refrigeration systems that vaporize and liquefy a fluid during the refrigerating cycle. Refrigerant piping design and installation, including pressure vessels and pressure relief devices, shall conform to this code. Permanently installed refrigerant storage systems and other components shall be considered as part of the refrigeration system to which they are attached. This chapter shall also govern the change of refrigerants in existing refrigerating systems having a different safety group classification.\n\n1101.2 Factory-built equipment and appliances.\n\nListed and labeled self-contained, factory-built equipment and appliances shall be tested in accordance with UL 207, 412, 471 or 1995. Such equipment and appliances are deemed to meet the design, manufacture and factory test requirements of this code if installed in accordance with their listing and the manufacturer's instructions.\n\n1101.3 Protection.\n\nAny portion of a refrigeration system that is subject to physical damage shall be protected in an approved manner.\n\n1101.4 Water connection.\n\nWater supply and discharge connections associated with refrigeration systems shall be made in accordance with this code and the New York City Plumbing Code.\n\n1101.5 Fuel-oil and fuel-gas connection.\n\nRefrigeration system devices, equipment and appliances utilizing fuel oil or fuel gas for combustion shall be installed in accordance with the applicable provisions of the New York City Fuel Gas Code and this code.\n\n1101.6 General.\n\nRefrigeration systems shall comply with the requirements of this code and, except as modified by this code, ASHRAE 15. Ammonia-refrigerating systems shall comply with this code and, except as modified by this code, ASHRAE 15 and IIAR 2. Such systems shall be maintained in accordance with the New York City Fire Code.\n\n1101.7 Maintenance.\n\nMechanical refrigeration systems shall be maintained in proper operating condition, free from accumulations of oil, dirt, waste, excessive corrosion, other debris and leaks.\n\n1101.8 Change in refrigerant type.\n\nThe type of refrigerant in refrigeration systems having a refrigerant circuit containing more than 220 pounds (99.8 kg) of Group A1 or 30 pounds (13.6 kg) of any other group refrigerant shall not be changed without prior notification to the commissioner and compliance with the applicable code provisions for the new refrigerant type. The refrigerant being considered shall be evaluated for suitability by an engineer. Whenever change in the type of refrigerant is to be done, consideration shall be given to the following:\n\n1. The effects of the substitute refrigerant on materials in the system;\n\n2. The possibility of overloading the liquid receiver, which shall not be more than 80 percent full of liquid;\n\n3. The possibility of exceeding motor rating, design working pressure, or other requirements that would violate any of the provisions of this code;\n\n4. The proper size of refrigerant controls;\n\n5. The effect of the operation and setting of safety devices;\n\n6. The possible hazards created by mixture of the original and the substituted refrigerant; and\n\n7. The effect of the classification of the refrigerant as provided.\n\n1101.9 Refrigerant discharge.\n\nNotification of refrigerant discharge shall be provided in accordance with the New York City Fire Code.\n\n1101.10 Gas and oil fired absorption systems.\n\nRefrigeration systems utilizing fuel oil or fuel gas for combustion shall be installed in accordance with the applicable provisions of the New York City Fuel Gas Code and this code.\n\n1101.11 Signs, nameplates, and operation and emergency shutdown instructions.\n\nSigns, nameplates, and operation and emergency shutdown instructions for refrigeration systems shall comply with the following:\n\n1. Sections 9.15, 11.2.1, 11.2.2, 11.2.4, and 11.7 of ASHRAE 15.\n\n2. Each refrigeration unit or system shall be provided with a nameplate indicating the horsepower of the prime mover or compressor and the equivalent of such horsepower in kilowatts.\n\n3. Section 1105.11 of this code.\n\n1101.12 Locking access port caps.\n\nRefrigerant circuit access ports located outdoors shall be fitted with locking-type tamper-resistant caps requiring a special tool or key to open.","path":["New York City Administrative Code","Title 28","Chapter 8: New York City Mechanical Code"],"source_url":"https://files.amlegal.com/pdffiles/NewYorkCity/Admin/XML.zip","current_through":"Local Law 2026/135 (enacted August 31, 2026)","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-06T02:48:57Z","sha256":"08c9089eb603a6070ecd496dbfd7329815e21372fd57a16e7c4664c76d96f980","source_id":"us-nyc","stale":false,"prev":"us-nyc/n.y.c.-admin.-code-mc-1012","next":"us-nyc/n.y.c.-admin.-code-mc-1102"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
