Code § MC 1209","heading":"Section MC 1209: Embedded Piping","body":"1209.1 Materials.\n\nEmbedded piping shall be plastic pipe or tubing, in accordance with Section 1202, rated at 100 psi (689.5 kPa) at 180°F (82.2°C).\n\n1209.2 Pressurizing during installation.\n\nPiping to be embedded in concrete shall be pressure tested prior to pouring concrete. During pouring, the pipe shall be maintained at the proposed operating pressure.\n\n1209.3 Embedded joints.\n\nJoints of pipe or tubing that are embedded in a portion of the building, such as concrete or plaster, shall be thermally-fused.\n\n1209.4 Not embedded related piping.\n\nJoints of other piping in cavities or running exposed shall be joined in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and related sections of this code.\n\n1209.5 Thermal barrier required.\n\nRadiant floor heating systems shall be provided with a thermal barrier in accordance with Sections 1209.5.1 through 1209.5.4.\n\nException: Insulation shall not be required in engineered systems where it can be demonstrated that the insulation will decrease the efficiency or have a negative effect on the installation.\n\n1209.5.1 Slab-on-grade installation.\n\nRadiant piping utilized in slab-on-grade applications shall be provided with insulating materials installed beneath the piping having a minimum R-value of 5.\n\n1209.5.2 Suspended floor installation.\n\nIn suspended floor applications, insulation shall be installed in the joist bay cavity serving the heating space above and shall consist of materials having a minimum R-value of 11.\n\n1209.5.3 Thermal break required.\n\nA thermal break shall be provided consisting of asphalt expansion joint materials or similar insulating materials at a point where a heated slab meets a foundation wall or other conductive slab.\n\n1209.5.4 Thermal barrier material marking.\n\nInsulating materials utilized in thermal barriers shall be installed such that the manufacturer's R-value mark is readily observable upon inspection.","path":["New York City Administrative Code","Title 28","Chapter 8: New York City Mechanical Code"],"source_url":"https://files.amlegal.com/pdffiles/NewYorkCity/Admin/XML.zip","current_through":"Local Law 2026/135 (enacted August 31, 2026)","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-06T02:48:57Z","sha256":"959ebdcce1ea0348b951c81d5cf7d82171d9a291332ee153bed4a3dae323119b","source_id":"us-nyc","stale":false,"prev":"us-nyc/n.y.c.-admin.-code-mc-1208","next":"us-nyc/n.y.c.-admin.-code-mc-1210"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
