Code § MC 505","heading":"Section MC 505: Domestic Kitchen Exhaust Equipment","body":"505.1 Domestic systems.\n\nWhere domestic range hoods or domestic appliances equipped with downdraft exhaust are provided, such hoods and appliances shall discharge to the outdoors through ducts constructed of galvanized steel, stainless steel, aluminum or copper. Such ducts shall have smooth inner walls, shall be air tight, shall be equipped with a backdraft damper and shall be independent of all other exhaust systems. Such exhaust system shall be installed in strict compliance with the manufacturer's instructions as well as the requirements of the listing.\n\nExceptions:\n\n1. In other than Group I-1 and I-2, where installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and where mechanical or natural ventilation is otherwise provided in accordance with Chapter 4, listed and labeled ductless range hoods shall not be required to discharge to the outdoors.\n\n2. Ducts for domestic kitchen cooking appliances equipped with downdraft exhaust systems shall be permitted to be constructed of Schedule 40 PVC pipe and fittings provided that the installation complies with all of the following:\n\n2.1. The duct shall be installed under a concrete slab poured on grade.\n\n2.2. The underfloor trench in which the duct is installed shall be completely backfilled with sand or gravel.\n\n2.3. The PVC duct shall extend not more than 1 inch (25.4 mm) above the indoor concrete floor surface.\n\n2.4. The PVC duct shall extend not more than 1 inch (25.4 mm) above grade outside of the building.\n\n2.5. The PVC ducts shall be solvent cemented.\n\n505.2 Makeup air required.\n\nExhaust hood systems where required by Chapter 4 shall be provided with makeup air at a rate in accordance with Table 403.3.1.1. Such makeup air systems shall be equipped with a means of closure and shall be automatically controlled to start and operate simultaneously with the exhaust system.\n\n505.3 Reserved.\n\n505.4 Other than Group R.\n\nAll domestic cooking appliances installed in cafeterias and in Group A-1, A-2, A-4, A-5, and M occupancies shall be provided with hoods and exhaust systems as required for the type of appliances and processes in accordance with Sections 506 and 507. In other than Group R occupancies, domestic appliances may be provided with domestic kitchen exhaust systems ducted to outdoors in accordance with this section provided that the installation complies with all of the following:\n\n1. No more than two domestic cooking appliances are installed in each fire separated room or tenancy in other than Group E occupancies;\n\n2. Each appliance shall have electric or gas connections and nameplate ratings not to exceed 10 kW for electric appliances or 75,000 Btu/h for gas appliances. Branch gas connections shall not be larger than 3/4 inch (19.1 mm) pipe;\n\n3. The appliances shall not include open top broilers or fryers; and\n\n4. The appliances are used for periodic, non-commercial, non-revenue generating purposes, except for in Group A-3 occupancies, where such appliances may be used a maximum of 8 hours per week to generate revenue.","path":["New York City Administrative Code","Title 28","Chapter 8: New York City Mechanical Code"],"source_url":"https://files.amlegal.com/pdffiles/NewYorkCity/Admin/XML.zip","current_through":"Local Law 2026/135 (enacted August 31, 2026)","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-06T02:48:57Z","sha256":"dd68001b36a3b6e827f5411c53a6df0b68f862089e2d02ebd54c7e1e34f482fe","source_id":"us-nyc","stale":false,"prev":"us-nyc/n.y.c.-admin.-code-mc-504","next":"us-nyc/n.y.c.-admin.-code-mc-506"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
