Code § MC 508","heading":"Section MC 508: Commercial Kitchen Makeup Air","body":"508.1 Makeup air.\n\nMakeup air shall be supplied during the operation of commercial kitchen exhaust systems that are provided for commercial cooking appliances. The amount of makeup air supplied to the building from all sources shall be approximately equal to the amount of exhaust air for all exhaust systems for the building. The makeup air shall not reduce the effectiveness of the exhaust system. Makeup air shall be provided by gravity or mechanical means or both. Mechanical makeup air systems shall be automatically controlled to start and operate simultaneously with the exhaust system. Makeup air intake opening locations shall comply with Section 401.4. Makeup air shall be provided in accordance with the New York City Energy Conservation Code.\n\n508.1.1 Makeup air temperature.\n\nThe temperature differential between makeup air delivered to the space and the air in the conditioned space shall not exceed 10ºF (6ºC) except where the makeup air contributes to satisfying the heating or cooling loads of the space and such temperature differential does not exceed 25°F (-38.9°C). The makeup air delivered to a compensating hood with front facing or side facing discharges shall be considered as being delivered to the space for the purposes of this section.\n\n508.1.2 Air balance\n\nDesign plans for a commercial kitchen ventilation system shall include a schedule or diagram indicating the design air balance of the kitchen and all communicating spaces clearly indicating makeup, transfer, exhaust and infiltration air flow rates. Negative pressurization caused by the kitchen exhaust system shall not cause improper operation of systems in communicating spaces or cause door opening forces in the building to exceed the limits set forth in Chapter 10 of the New York City Building Code.\n\n508.2 Compensating hoods.\n\nManufacturers of compensating hoods shall provide a label indicating minimum exhaust flow and/or maximum makeup airflow that provides capture and containment of the exhaust effluent.\n\nException: Compensating hoods with makeup air supplied only from the front face discharge and side face discharge openings shall not be required to be labeled with the maximum makeup airflow.","path":["New York City Administrative Code","Title 28","Chapter 8: New York City Mechanical Code"],"source_url":"https://files.amlegal.com/pdffiles/NewYorkCity/Admin/XML.zip","current_through":"Local Law 2026/135 (enacted August 31, 2026)","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-06T02:48:57Z","sha256":"4bc922fd2ee53fe1f6477fd469fa5c1b950167fb7972195e78c8b8bb583dd7d5","source_id":"us-nyc","stale":false,"prev":"us-nyc/n.y.c.-admin.-code-mc-507","next":"us-nyc/n.y.c.-admin.-code-mc-509"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
