The city council of any city may provide by ordinance for\n\nthe submission to a vote of the registered voters of the city the\n\nquestion of providing for the appointment by the mayor, with the\n\napproval of the council, of the city marshal, the street\n\ncommissioner, the city clerk, the city treasurer, or the city clerk-\n\ntreasurer.\n\nB. The board of trustees of any town may provide by ordinance\n\nfor the submission to a vote of the registered voters of the town\n\nthe question of providing for the appointment by the board of\n\ntrustees of the town clerk, the town treasurer or the town clerk-\n\ntreasurer.\n\nC. The question of appointing each official shall be submitted\n\nseparately on the ballot. The question providing for the\n\nappointment of the clerk or the treasurer may be consolidated into\n\none question provided the two offices are to be consolidated into\n\nthe office of clerk-treasurer. The question providing for the\n\nappointment of any official shall read substantially as follows:\n\nShall the (Marshal, Street Commissioner, Clerk, Treasurer,\n\nClerk-Treasurer) be appointed by the (mayor, with the approval of\n\nthe council, board of trustees)?\n\n( ) Yes.\n\n( ) No.\n\nIf a majority of the votes cast are in favor of appointment to the\n\noffice, the appointive position shall take effect at the end of the\n\ncurrent term of the office. In cities, the appointive officer shall\n\nbe appointed and may be removed by the mayor, with the approval of\n\nthe council.
