Stat. tit. 11, § 11-29-109","heading":"Municipalities permitted to contract for fire","body":"protection.\n\nA. Any city or town operating a paid fire department may\n\ncontract with a private entity, organization, corporation or company\n\nfor the performance of the essential functions of fire suppression,\n\nprevention, and life safety duties in a fire department and, if\n\nrequired, transfer capital assets used in fire protection services\n\nto a public trust for the use of the private entity, organization,\n\ncorporation or company in providing such services. Pursuant to the\n\nprovisions of this act, the mayor shall issue an order calling for\n\nan election on the question of whether or not the city or town shall\n\nchange its method of providing fire protection if:\n\n1. An initiative petition is filed with the governing body of\n\nthe municipality; or\n\n2. The governing body, by resolution, so directs.\n\nB. The initiative petition or resolution of the governing body\n\nshall be filed with the clerk of the municipality at least one\n\nhundred twenty (120) days before the filing date for the next\n\nmunicipal general election.
