Stat. tit. 19, § 19-731","heading":"Tax levy to provide for buildings - Vote","body":"The board of county commissioners is authorized to provide for\n\nthe construction or repairing of courthouses, jails or other\n\nnecessary buildings, and make contracts on behalf of the county for\n\nbuilding or repairing the same, and for the purpose of providing a\n\nfund for the payment of the cost of the same such board of county\n\ncommissioners is hereby authorized and empowered to provide for the\n\nlevy of a tax and to continue such provision from year to year for a\n\nperiod not exceeding five (5) years: Provided, that such levy for\n\nsuch purpose, together with the levies for all other purposes shall\n\nnot exceed the amount authorized by law: Provided, further, that\n\nthe money, raised by such levy, shall constitute a separate and\n\ndistinct fund from all others in the hands of the county treasurer\n\nuntil the obligation assumed by the board of county commissioners\n\nunder authority of this section shall have been discharged. And\n\nprovided, further, that no levy of taxes for the purposes of this\n\nsection shall be made until after a majority of the legally\n\nqualified voters of said county, voting upon said proposition, shall\n\nhave voted in favor of the expenditures whose payment is to be\n\nprovided for by said levy or levies of taxes, at a general election\n\nat which said proposition shall be submitted, or at a special\n\nelection called for the purpose of voting upon said proposition.\n\nThe proposition submitted at such general or special election shall\n\nbe whether or not the board of county commissioners shall be\n\nauthorized to expend the sum desired (stating such sum) for the\n\nbuilding of a courthouse, jail, or other necessary building, and\n\nshall be arranged on the ballot in suitable and convenient form for\n\nvoting. Such special election shall be held as nearly as possible\n\nin conformity to the general election laws of the state; and at any\n\nsuch general or special election the votes upon the proposition\n\nsubmitted shall be counted and canvassed, the returns thereof made,\n\nand the results declared as nearly in conformity to the general\n\nelection laws of the state as possible: Provided, that notice of\n\nthe submitting of such proposition to the voters of the county shall\n\nbe given by the county clerk by publication in at least two\n\nnewspapers published in said county and having a general circulation\n\ntherein, for not less than thirty (30) days immediately prior to\n\nsaid election: And provided, further, that if there is only one\n\npaper published in such county, publication in that paper for the\n\nrequired time shall be sufficient; and if no paper be published\n\ntherein, notice of such election shall be given by posting up\n\nwritten or printed notices thereof for the required time, at least\n\none in each voting precinct of such county at the most public places\n\nin said precinct.","path":["OK Code","Title 19"],"source_url":"https://www.oklegislature.gov/OK_Statutes/CompleteTitles/os19.pdf","current_through":"2026-08-14","vintage":"open-us-law v2026.08, retrieved 2026-09-14","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T18:32:36Z","sha256":"97545669556b6057066f5858101c4736328dd7470d7d8cc10d06939136fb41b6","source_id":"us-ok","stale":false,"prev":"us-ok/okla.-stat.-tit.-19-19-73","next":"us-ok/okla.-stat.-tit.-19-19-732"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
