Oklahoma is one of the leading agricultural-producing states\n\nin the nation. By being involved in such a diverse and highly\n\nmechanized industry, the more than one hundred thirty-five thousand\n\nagricultural workers in Oklahoma are susceptible to any one of a\n\nnumber of work-related injuries and chronic health problems that\n\nlimit the ability of an individual to safely continue farming;\n\n2. Available estimates indicate that each year in Oklahoma more\n\nfarm workers sustain fatal injuries than any other work group and\n\noften have nonfatal injuries which result in permanent physical\n\ndisabilities affecting their future income;\n\n3. It is estimated that nationwide more than two hundred\n\nthousand farmers, ranchers, and other agricultural workers\n\nexperience injuries that result in lost work time. Of these\n\ninjuries, five percent (5%) have serious or permanent results;\n\n4. According to recent survey data, approximately seventeen\n\nthousand Oklahoma farmers have permanent disabilities as a result of\n\naccidents, health-related ailments, and age.\n\n5. Farm operators and workers are typically highly skilled\n\nindividuals and the loss of these individuals to a disability\n\nnegatively impacts the Oklahoma farm economy. The AgrAbility\n\nProject established by the United States Department of Agriculture\n\nhas been successful in helping agricultural workers with a disbility\n\nto continue to farm.
