Stat. tit. 20, § 20-1710","heading":"Good cause for services of registered or non-certified","body":"persons.\n\nIn district court proceedings, the court shall endeavor to\n\nobtain the services of a courtroom interpreter with the highest\n\navailable level of credential prior to accepting services of an\n\ninterpreter with lesser credential and skill. Certified courtroom\n\ninterpreters have the highest recognized level of credential in this\n\nstate, and registered courtroom interpreters have the next highest\n\nlevel. When good cause is shown and the court has determined that\n\nit would not be practical, within a reasonable time frame, to secure\n\nthe services of an individual certified under Sections 1701 through\n\n1710 of this title, the court may utilize the services of a\n\nregistered courtroom interpreter. When good cause is shown and the\n\ncourt has determined that it would not be practical, within a\n\nreasonable time frame, to secure the services of a registered\n\ncourtroom interpreter, the court may utilize the services of a\n\nprovisional interpreter or other person who does not hold a\n\ncertified or registered credential. If the Board establishes\n\nadditional levels of qualified interpreters, the court shall follow\n\nthe recognized hierarchy of credential when endeavoring to obtain\n\ninterpreter services. For purposes of this section, \"good cause\"\n\nmeans that due to the nature of the hearing, and time being of the\n\nessence, the securing of a certified or registered interpreter would\n\nnot be possible due to the time, distance, or availability of a\n\ncertified or registered interpreter. The court shall make a\n\nspecific finding as to the good cause for the emergency\n\ncircumstances. In addition, the non-credentialed person shall have\n\nreasonably demonstrated to the court and the parties such person's\n\nproficiency for the purposes of that hearing. It is also mandatory\n\nthat the proceedings are audio taped, and in the event of deaf or\n\nhard of hearing individuals, audio and video taped.
