Stat. tit. 22, § 22-1343","heading":"Detention of suspect - Purposes","body":"Any merchant, his agent or employee, who has reasonable grounds\n\nor probable cause to believe that a person has committed or is\n\ncommitting a wrongful taking of merchandise or money from a\n\nmercantile establishment, may detain such person in a reasonable\n\nmanner for a reasonable length of time for all or any of the\n\nfollowing purposes:\n\n(a) Conducting an investigation, including reasonable\n\ninterrogation of the detained person, as to whether there has been a\n\nwrongful taking of such merchandise or money;\n\n(b) Informing the police or other law enforcement officials of\n\nthe facts relevant to such detention;\n\n(c) Performing a reasonable search of the detained person and\n\nhis belongings when it appears that the merchandise or money may\n\notherwise be lost; and\n\n(d) Recovering the merchandise or money believed to have been\n\ntaken wrongfully.
