Stat. tit. 22, § 22-601b","heading":"Protracted deliberations - Sequestration of alternate","body":"jurors.\n\nIf, upon final submission of the cause, the court is of the\n\nopinion that the deliberations may be protracted, the court may\n\norder the alternate juror or jurors to remain sequestered physically\n\nor by admonition not to discuss the case with any person or allow\n\nany person to discuss the case with a juror. In such event said\n\nalternate or alternates shall remain apart from the jury and not\n\ntake part in its deliberations, but shall await the call of the\n\ncourt at some place designated by the court until such time as said\n\nalternate may be needed. In the event one or two of the twelve\n\njurors shall, during the course of deliberations, be discharged\n\nbecause of illness, or die, the court shall order one or both\n\nalternate jurors to take their places in the jury room and\n\ndeliberations shall then continue.\n\nIn the event the cause is a bifurcated, two-stage proceeding,\n\nthe \"final submission of the cause\" shall occur when the jury\n\nretires to deliberate upon the sentence in the punishment or second\n\nstage of the proceedings.
