Stat. tit. 40, § 40-173.1","heading":"Employers’ use of social security numbers – Health","body":"benefit plan membership identification cards.\n\nA. 1. Any employing entity located in this state shall not do\n\nany of the following:\n\na. publicly post or publicly display in any manner the\n\nsocial security number of an employee. For purposes\n\nof this paragraph, \"publicly post\" or \"publicly\n\ndisplay\" means to intentionally communicate or\n\notherwise make available to the general public,\n\nb. print the social security number of an employee on any\n\ncard required for the employee to access information,\n\nproducts or services provided by the employing entity,\n\nc. require an employee to transmit their social security\n\nnumber over the Internet, unless the connection is\n\nsecure or the social security number is encrypted,\n\nd. require an employee to use their social security\n\nnumber to access an Internet web site, unless a\n\npassword or unique personal identification number or\n\nother authentication device is also required to access\n\nthe Internet web site, or\n\ne. print the social security number of an employee on any\n\nmaterials that are mailed to the employee, unless\n\nstate or federal law requires the social security\n\nnumber to be on the document to be mailed.\n\nNotwithstanding this paragraph, social security\n\nnumbers may be included in applications and forms sent\n\nby mail, including documents sent as part of an\n\napplication or enrollment process, or to establish,\n\namend or terminate an account, contract or policy, or\n\nto confirm the accuracy of the social security number.\n\n2. The provisions of this subsection shall not apply to the\n\nstate or any political subdivision of the state.\n\nB. The provisions of this section shall not apply to a health\n\nbenefit plan membership identification card issued or renewed prior\n\nto January 1, 2005. After January 1, 2005, the provisions of this\n\nsection shall be applicable to all health benefit plan membership\n\ncards upon issuance or renewal.\n\nC. This section shall not prevent the collection, use, or\n\nrelease of a social security number as otherwise required by state\n\nor federal law or the use of a social security number for internal\n\nverification or administrative purposes.
