Stat. tit. 45, § 45-914","heading":"Travelways - Rules and procedures","body":"The following rules and procedures shall be complied with in\n\ndealing with travelways:\n\n1. Safe means of access shall be provided and maintained to all\n\nworking places;\n\n2. Crossovers, elevated walkways, elevated ramps and stairways\n\nshall be of substantial construction, provided with handrails and\n\nmaintained in good condition. Where necessary, toeboards shall be\n\nprovided;\n\n3. Ladders shall be of substantial construction, maintained in\n\ngood condition and regularly inspected;\n\n4. Portable straight ladders shall be provided with nonslip\n\nbases, shall be placed against a safe backing at the proper angle\n\nand set on secure footing;\n\n5. Fixed ladders shall be anchored securely and installed to\n\nprovide at least three (3) inches of toe clearance;\n\n6. Fixed ladders shall have substantial railed landings at\n\nleast every thirty (30) feet unless backguards are provided;\n\n7. Steep fixed ladders, seventy (70) degrees to ninety (90)\n\ndegrees from the horizontal, thirty (30) feet or more in length\n\nshall be provided with backguards, cages or equivalent protection,\n\nstarting at a point not more than seven (7) feet from the bottom of\n\nthe ladder;\n\n8. Fixed ladders shall project at least three (3) feet above\n\nlandings or substantial handholds shall be provided above the\n\nlandings;\n\n9. Wooden members of ladders shall not be painted;\n\n10. Ladderways, stairways, walkways and ramps shall be kept\n\nfree of loose rock and extraneous materials;\n\n11. Men climbing or descending ladders shall face the ladders\n\nand have both hands free for climbing;\n\n12. Railed walkways shall be provided wherever persons are\n\nregularly required to walk along conveyor belts. Inclined railed\n\nwalkways shall be nonskid or provided with cleats;\n\n13. Openings above, below or near travelways through which men\n\nor materials may fall shall be protected by railings, barriers or\n\ncovers. Where it is impractical to install such protective devices,\n\nadequate warning signals shall be posted;\n\n14. Scaffolds and working platforms shall be of substantial\n\nconstruction and provided with handrails and maintained in good\n\ncondition. Floorboards shall be laid properly and the scaffolds and\n\nworking platforms shall not be overloaded. Working platforms shall\n\nbe provided with toeboards where necessary;\n\n15. Crossovers shall be provided where it is necessary to cross\n\nconveyors;\n\n16. Moving conveyors shall be crossed only at designated\n\ncrossover points;\n\n17. Slippery walkways shall be provided with cleats and\n\nhandrails and/or ropes; and\n\n18.
