Stat. tit. 47, § 47-1-104","heading":"Bicycle, electric-assisted bicycle, and motorized","body":"bicycle.\n\nA. A bicycle is a device upon which any person or persons may\n\nride, propelled solely by human power through a belt, chain, or\n\ngears, and having two or more wheels, excluding mopeds.\n\nB. An electric-assisted bicycle is any bicycle with:\n\n1. Two or three wheels; and\n\n2. Fully operative pedals for human propulsion and equipped\n\nwith an electric motor with a power output of not more than seven\n\nhundred fifty (750) watts that meets the requirements of one of the\n\nfollowing three classes:\n\na. \"Class 1 electric-assisted bicycle\" shall mean an\n\nelectric-assisted bicycle equipped with a motor that\n\nprovides assistance only when the rider is pedaling,\n\nand that ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle\n\nreaches the speed of twenty (20) miles per hour,\n\nb. \"Class 2 electric-assisted bicycle\" shall mean an\n\nelectric-assisted bicycle equipped with a motor that\n\nmay be used exclusively to propel the bicycle, and\n\nthat is not capable of providing assistance when the\n\nbicycle reaches the speed of twenty (20) miles per\n\nhour, and\n\nc. \"Class 3 electric-assisted bicycle\" shall mean an\n\nelectric-assisted bicycle equipped with a motor that\n\nprovides assistance only when the rider is pedaling,\n\nand that ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle\n\nreaches the speed of twenty-eight (28) miles per hour.\n\nAn electric-assisted bicycle shall meet the manufacturing and\n\nequipment requirements adopted by the Consumer Product Safety\n\nCommission for bicycles and shall operate in such a manner that the\n\nelectric motor disengages or ceases to function when the rider stops\n\npedaling or the brakes are applied.\n\nC. A motorized bicycle is any bicycle having:\n\n1. Fully operative pedals for propulsion by human power;\n\n2. A power drive system that functions directly or\n\nautomatically without clutching or shifting by the operator after\n\nthe drive system is engaged; and\n\n3. A combustion engine with a piston or rotor displacement of\n\neighty (80 cu cm) cubic centimeters or less, regardless of the\n\nnumber of chambers in the engine, which is capable of propelling the\n\nbicycle at a maximum design speed of not more than thirty-five (35)\n\nmiles per hour on level ground.\n\nD.
