Stat. tit. 47, § 47-12-228","heading":"Special lighting equipment and warning devices on","body":"school buses and church buses.\n\nA. In addition to any other equipment and distinctive markings\n\nrequired by this title, every school bus and every church bus shall\n\nbe equipped with signal lamps mounted as high and as widely spaced\n\nlaterally as practicable, which shall display to the front two\n\nalternately flashing red lights located at the same level and to the\n\nrear two alternately flashing red lights located at the same level.\n\nThese lights shall be visible at five hundred (500) feet in normal\n\nsunlight.\n\nB. Every school bus shall bear upon the front and rear thereof\n\nplainly visible signs containing the words \"SCHOOL BUS\" in letters\n\nnot less than eight (8) inches in height, located between the\n\nwarning signal lights as high as possible without impairing\n\nvisibility of the lettering, and have no other lettering on the\n\nfront or rear of the vehicle, except as required by 47 C.F.R., Part\n\n571.\n\nC. Every church bus shall bear upon the front and rear thereof\n\nplainly visible signs containing the words \"CHURCH BUS\" in letters\n\nnot less than eight (8) inches in height, located between the\n\nwarning signal lights as high as possible without impairing\n\nvisibility of the lettering. In addition, such church bus may be\n\nequipped with visual signals meeting the requirements of subsection\n\nA of this section.\n\nD. Every school bus manufactured on or after September 1, 1992,\n\nshall be equipped with a stop signal arm that complies with 49\n\nC.F.R., Section 571.131.\n\nE. In addition to the lights required by subsection A of this\n\nsection, any school bus shall be equipped with amber signal lamps\n\nmounted near each of the four red lamps and at the same level but\n\ncloser to the vertical center line of the bus, which shall display\n\ntwo alternately flashing amber lights to the front and two\n\nalternately flashing amber lights to the rear. These lights shall\n\nbe visible at five hundred (500) feet in normal sunlight. These\n\nlights shall be displayed by the school bus driver at least one\n\nhundred (100) feet, but not more than five hundred (500) feet,\n\nbefore every stop at which the alternately flashing red lights\n\nrequired by subsection A will be actuated.\n\nF. The State Board of Education, with the approval of the\n\nCommissioner of Public Safety, is authorized to adopt standards and\n\nspecifications applicable to lighting equipment on and special\n\nwarning devices to be carried by school buses consistent with, and\n\nsupplemental to, the provisions of this chapter. Such standards and\n\nspecifications shall be identical to any Federal Motor Vehicle\n\nSafety Standard which regulates the same aspect of performance of\n\nthe same equipment or device. Where there is no applicable Federal\n\nMotor Vehicle Safety Standard, the standards and specifications\n\nshall conform to the greatest extent feasible with any other\n\nrelevant standard issued or endorsed by federal agencies or\n\nrecognized standard-setting organizations.\n\nG. During the time any school bus or church bus is operating,\n\nthe school bus or church bus shall have its headlights activated.\n\nH. It shall be unlawful to operate any red flashing warning\n\nsignal light on any school bus except when any said school bus is\n\nstopped on a highway for the purpose of permitting school children\n\nto board or discharge from said school bus.\n\nI. It shall be unlawful to operate any red flashing warning\n\nsignal light on any church bus except when any said bus is stopped\n\non a highway for the purpose of permitting passengers to board or\n\ndischarge from said bus.\n\nJ. The use of the signal equipment described herein shall\n\nimpose upon drivers of other vehicles the obligation to yield right-\n\nof-way and stop for school buses, as prescribed in Section 11-705 of\n\nthis title, and for church buses, as prescribed in Section 11-705.1\n\nof this title.\n\nK. The loading lamps on school buses converted for purposes\nitting passengers to board or\n\ndischarge from said bus.\n\nJ. The use of the signal equipment described herein shall\n\nimpose upon drivers of other vehicles the obligation to yield right-\n\nof-way and stop for school buses, as prescribed in Section 11-705 of\n\nthis title, and for church buses, as prescribed in Section 11-705.1\n\nof this title.\n\nK.
