It shall be the duty of every sheriff, chief of police or\n\npeace officer to make immediate report to the Department of Public\n\nSafety of all vehicles reported to their respective jurisdictions as\n\nbeing stolen or recovered. Such report shall be made as prescribed\n\nby the Department.\n\nB. An owner or a lienholder may report the theft of a vehicle,\n\nor its conversion if a crime, to the Department, but the Department\n\nmay disregard the report of a conversion unless a warrant has been\n\nissued for the arrest of a person charged with the conversion. A\n\nperson who has so reported the theft or conversion of a vehicle\n\nshall, forthwith after learning of its recovery, report the recovery\n\nto the Department.\n\nC. An operator of a place of business for garaging, repairing,\n\nparking or storing vehicles for the public, in which a vehicle\n\nremains unclaimed for a period of thirty (30) days, shall, within\n\nfive (5) days after the expiration of that period, report the\n\nvehicle as unclaimed to the Department. Such report shall be on a\n\nform prescribed by the Department.\n\nA vehicle left by its owner whose name and address are known to\n\nthe operator or employee of the operator is not considered\n\nunclaimed. A person who fails to report a vehicle as unclaimed in\n\naccordance with this subsection forfeits all claims and liens for\n\nits garaging, parking or storing and is guilty of a misdemeanor\n\npunishable by a fine or not more than Twenty-five Dollars ($25.00)\n\nfor each day the failure to report continues.\n\nD. The Department shall maintain and appropriately index\n\ncumulative public records of stolen, converted, recovered and\n\nunclaimed vehicles reported to it pursuant to this section. The\n\nDepartment may make and distribute weekly lists of such vehicles so\n\nreported to it to peace officers upon request without fee and to\n\nothers for the fee, if any, the Department prescribes.\n\nE. Any peace officer who has reason to believe or upon\n\nreceiving information that a motor vehicle has been stolen shall\n\nhave and is hereby vested with authority to confiscate and hold such\n\nvehicle until satisfactory proof of ownership is established.\n\nProvided, any vehicle that is towed by a licensed wrecker operator\n\npursuant to the provisions of Section 954A of this title shall be\n\nreturned to the licensed wrecker operator prior to any other claim\n\nor assertion of ownership.","path":["OK Code","Title 47"],"source_url":"https://www.oklegislature.gov/OK_Statutes/CompleteTitles/os47.pdf","current_through":"2026-08-14","vintage":"open-us-law v2026.08, retrieved 2026-09-14","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T18:32:36Z","sha256":"3e3d757226f4480a5765f47a3cbd8b6d0622b427d81dbaa22cb5504ee0af2950","source_id":"us-ok","stale":false,"prev":"us-ok/okla.-stat.-tit.-47-47-4-104","next":"us-ok/okla.-stat.-tit.-47-47-4-106"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
