An inmate of a state correctional institution may be\n\nassigned to a state agency other than the Department of Corrections,\n\nto a county or municipal jail, or to a federal agency, for service\n\nand maintenance work for the federal agency, the state, county or\n\nmunicipality. Such transfer shall be subject to the approval of the\n\nchief administrative officer of the federal or state agency, sheriff\n\nof the county or the chief of police of a municipality, which will\n\nemploy the inmate. Preference shall be given to inmates who, while\n\nincarcerated in a state correctional institution, have attained a\n\nhigh school diploma or equivalent general education diploma or\n\ncompleted a literacy program approved by the Department of\n\nCorrections. Such federal or state agency, county or municipality,\n\nshall be responsible for the security, lodging, food costs, and\n\npersonal expense money of each inmate under the care of the chief\n\nadministrative officer of the federal or state agency, county\n\nsheriff or the chief of police of such municipality. Any expense\n\nmonies shall be approved by the chief administrative officer,\n\nsheriff or the chief of police.\n\nB. The Department of Corrections shall reimburse the state,\n\ncounty or municipality for the actual costs paid for any emergency\n\nmedical care for physical injury or illness of the inmate retained\n\nunder this act.
