Stat. tit. 57, § 57-42","heading":"Common jails used as prisons, when","body":"\n\nThe common jails in the several counties in the charge of the\n\nrespective sheriffs, shall be used as prisons:\n\n1. For the detention of persons charged with offenses, and duly\n\ncommitted for trial.\n\n2. For the detention of persons who may be duly committed, to\n\nsecure their attendance as witnesses on the trial of any criminal\n\ncause.\n\n3. For the confinement of persons pursuant to a sentence, upon\n\na conviction for an offense and of all other persons duly committed\n\nfor any cause authorized by law.\n\n4.
