Stat. tit. 57, § 57-58","heading":"Employment of prisoners","body":"\n\nWherever any person shall be confined in any jail pursuant to\n\nthe sentence of any court, if such sentence or any part thereof\n\nshall be that he be confined at hard labor, the sheriff of the\n\ncounty in which such person shall be confined shall furnish such\n\nconvict with suitable tools and materials to work with, if, in the\n\nopinion of the said sheriff, the said convict can be profitably\n\nemployed either in the jail or yard thereof, and the expense of said\n\ntools and materials shall be defrayed by the county in which said\n\nconvict shall be confined, and said county shall be entitled to his\n\nearnings. And it shall be the duty of said sheriff, if in his\n\nopinion the said convict can be more profitably employed outside of\n\nsaid jail or yard, either for the county or for any municipality in\n\nsaid county, so to employ said convict, either in work on public\n\nstreets or highways or otherwise; and in so doing he shall take all\n\nnecessary precaution to prevent said convict's escape, by ball and\n\nchain or otherwise, and fifty percent (50%) of the profits of such\n\nemployment, after paying all expenses incident thereto, may be\n\nretained by said sheriff as his fees therefor, the balance to be\n\npaid into the treasury of the proper county to the credit of the\n\ngeneral fund; and when a convict is imprisoned in the county jail\n\nfor nonpayment of a fine he may be employed by said sheriff as\n\nprovided in this chapter; and in case any convict employed outside\n\nof the jail yard shall escape, he shall be deemed as having escaped\n\nfrom the jail proper.","path":["OK Code","Title 57"],"source_url":"https://www.oklegislature.gov/OK_Statutes/CompleteTitles/os57.pdf","current_through":"2026-08-14","vintage":"open-us-law v2026.08, retrieved 2026-09-14","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T18:32:36Z","sha256":"94ab1bfab2b36190b86bf1d9256689f0a4f45625e8cbc2c1e22f42860e21a216","source_id":"us-ok","stale":false,"prev":"us-ok/okla.-stat.-tit.-57-57-571v2","next":"us-ok/okla.-stat.-tit.-57-57-58.1"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
