Stat. tit. 59, § 59-1250.1","heading":"Definitions","body":"As used in the Social Worker's Licensing Act:\n\n1. \"Approved provider of continuing education\" means an\n\nindividual, group, professional association, school, institution,\n\norganization, or agency approved by the Board to conduct educational\n\nprograms;\n\n2. \"Approved social work program\" means a school of social work\n\nor a social work educational program that has been approved by the\n\nBoard;\n\n3. \"Assessment\" means the gathering of data about emotional,\n\nbehavioral, mental, environmental, biopsychosocial, and\n\ninteractional processes gathered in an effort to identify the\n\nclient's past and current level of functioning. Assessment may also\n\ninclude the use of standardized psychometric testing instruments\n\nupon successful completion of appropriate, specialized courses or\n\ntraining;\n\n4. \"Board\" means the State Board of Licensed Social Workers,\n\nwhich shall also be known as the State Board of Social Work;\n\n5. \"Board approved clinical supervisor\" means a licensed\n\nclinical social worker who has met the qualifications determined by\n\nthe Board for supervision in a clinical setting;\n\n6. \"Board approved supervisor\" means a licensed clinical social\n\nworker (LCSW) who has met the qualifications determined by the Board\n\nfor licensure as a supervisor;\n\n7. \"Case management\" means a method to plan, provide, evaluate,\n\nand monitor services from a variety of resources on behalf of and in\n\ncollaboration with a client;\n\n8. \"Client\" means the individual, couple, family, group,\n\norganization, or community that seeks or receives social work\n\nservices;\n\n9. \"Clinical social work practice\" means the practice of social\n\nwork by a social worker including assessment and diagnosis of\n\nbehavioral disorders, treatment planning, planning intervention,\n\ncase management, information and referrals, including referrals to\n\nan appropriate allopathic or osteopathic physician when the\n\ndiagnosis or treatment is in question or psychiatric or medical\n\ntreatment is indicated. Treatment methods include the provision of\n\nindividual, marital, couple, family and group counseling and\n\npsychotherapy based on the education and training of the social\n\nworker. Treatment shall not include biological or medical\n\ntreatments. The practice of clinical social work may include\n\nprivate or independent practice;\n\n10. \"Clinical supervision\" means an interactional professional\n\nrelationship between a supervisor and a social worker that provides\n\nevaluation and direction over the supervisee's practice of clinical\n\nsocial work and promotes continued development of the social\n\nworker's knowledge, skills, and abilities to engage in the practice\n\nof clinical social work in an ethical and competent manner;\n\n11. \"Consultation\" means a problem solving process in which\n\nexpertise is offered to an individual, couple, family, group,\n\norganization or community;\n\n12. \"Continuing education\" means education and training which\n\nare oriented to maintain, improve or enhance the practice of social\n\nwork;\n\n13. \"Continuing education contact hour\" means a sixty-minute\n\nclock hour of instruction, not including breaks or meals;\n\n14. \"Conviction\" means conviction of a crime by a court of\n\ncompetent jurisdiction including a finding or verdict of guilt,\n\nwhether or not the adjudication of guilt is withheld or not entered\n\non admission of guilt, a plea of nolo contendere, or a guilty plea;\n\n15. \"Counseling\" means a method used by social workers to\n\nassist individuals, couples, families and groups in learning how to\n\nsolve problems and make decisions about personal, health, social,\n\neducational, vocational, financial, and other interpersonal\n\nconcerns;\n\n16. \"Diagnosis\" means the use of assessment tools such as the\n\nDiagnostic and Statistical Manual or the International\n\nClassification of Diseases;\n\n17. \"Employment supervision\" means the professional\n\nrelationship between a worksite supervisor and social worker in an\nproblems and make decisions about personal, health, social,\n\neducational, vocational, financial, and other interpersonal\n\nconcerns;\n\n16. \"Diagnosis\" means the use of assessment tools such as the\n\nDiagnostic and Statistical Manual or the International\n\nClassification of Diseases;\n\n17. \"Employment supervision\" means the professional\n\nrelationship between a worksite supervisor and social worker in an\n\nemployment setting which provides evaluation and direction as it\n\npertains to job-related duties. This type of supervision shall not\n\nbe accepted towards licensure supervision requirements;\n\n18. \"Examination\" means a standardized test or examination of\n\nsocial work knowledge, skills and abilities which have been approved\n\nby the Board;\n\n19. \"Implementation and evaluation\" means continuing to\n\nevaluate and monitor the effectiveness of the treatment plan;\n\n20. \"Independent social work practice\" means the practice of\n\nnonclinical social work by a licensed social worker (LSW), licensed\n\nclinical social worker (LCSW) or licensed social worker with\n\nadministration specialty (LSW-ADM) outside of an organized setting,\n\nsuch as a social, medical, or governmental agency, after completion\n\nof all applicable supervision requirements, in which the social\n\nworker assumes responsibility and accountability for services\n\nprovided;\n\n21. \"Intervention\" means application of techniques utilized to\n\nimplement the treatment plan appropriate to an assessment;\n\n22. \"Licensed clinical social worker\" (LCSW) means a person\n\nduly licensed to practice clinical social work under the Social\n\nWorker's Licensing Act;\n\n23. \"Licensed masters social worker\" (LMSW) means a person duly\n\nlicensed to practice social work under the Social Worker's Licensing\n\nAct and who holds a master's degree in social work;\n\n24. \"Licensed social work associate\" (LSWA) means a person duly\n\nlicensed to practice social work under the Social Worker's Licensing\n\nAct;\n\n25. \"Licensed social worker with administration specialty\"\n\n(LSW-ADM) means a person duly licensed to practice administrative\n\nsocial work under the Social Worker's Licensing Act;\n\n26. \"Licensed social worker\" (LSW) means a person duly licensed\n\nto practice social work under the Social Worker's Licensing Act;\n\n27. \"Licensee\" means a person duly licensed under the Social\n\nWorker's Licensing Act;\n\n28. \"Licensure supervisor\" means a licensed social worker who\n\nhas met the qualifications determined by the Board for a licensure\n\nsupervisor;\n\n29. \"Nonclinical social work\" means the practice of social work\n\nby a social worker to include but not be limited to case management,\n\nconsultation, education, advocacy and community organization, but\n\nexcluding counseling in independent practice, psychotherapy,\n\ntreatment and diagnosis;\n\n30. \"Nonclinical supervision\" means the supervision of social\n\nwork practice by a social worker to include but not be limited to\n\ncase management, consultation, education, advocacy and community\n\norganization;\n\n31. \"Practice of social work\" means the professional activity\n\nof helping individuals, groups or communities enhance or restore\n\ntheir capacity for physical, social and economic functioning and the\n\nprofessional application of social work values, principles and\n\ntechniques in areas such as clinical social work, social service\n\nadministration, social planning, social work consultation and social\n\nwork research to one or more of the following ends: Helping people\n\nobtain tangible services; counseling with individuals, families and\n\ngroups; helping communities or groups provide or improve social and\n\nhealth services; and participating in relevant social action. The\n\npractice of social work requires knowledge of human development and\n\nbehavior; of social economic and cultural institutions and forces;\n\nand of the interaction of all of these factors. Social work\nbtain tangible services; counseling with individuals, families and\n\ngroups; helping communities or groups provide or improve social and\n\nhealth services; and participating in relevant social action. The\n\npractice of social work requires knowledge of human development and\n\nbehavior; of social economic and cultural institutions and forces;\n\nand of the interaction of all of these factors. Social work\n\npractice includes the teaching of relevant subject matter and of\n\nconducting research into problems of human behavior and conflict.\n\nExcept as otherwise provided in the Social Worker's Licensing Act,\n\nreference to the \"practice of social work\" shall be the practice of\n\na person licensed under the Social Worker's Licensing Act;\n\n32. \"Private practice of clinical social work\" means the\n\npractice of social work performed by a licensed clinical social\n\nworker (LCSW) who is wholly or in part self-employed and who assumes\n\nresponsibility for the nature and quality of the services provided\n\nto the client in exchange for direct payment or third-party\n\nreimbursement, rather than a salaried employee of an organization or\n\ninstitution;\n\n33. \"Psychotherapy\" means the use of treatment methods\n\nutilizing a specialized, formal interaction between a clinical\n\nsocial worker and an individual, couple, family, or group in which a\n\ntherapeutic relationship is established, maintained and sustained to\n\nunderstand unconscious processes, intrapersonal, interpersonal, and\n\npsychosocial dynamics, and the diagnosis and treatment of mental,\n\nemotional, and behavioral disorders, conditions and addictions;\n\n34. \"Supervision\" means the professional relationship between\n\nan approved supervisor and a social worker that provides evaluation\n\nand direction over the services provided by the social worker and\n\npromotes continued development of the social worker's knowledge,\n\nskills and abilities to provide social work services in an ethical\n\nand competent manner; and\n\n35. \"Treatment planning\" or \"treatment plan\" means the\n\norganized approach of an assessment to guide the course of\n\nbehavioral health treatment based upon identified needs, problems\n\nand issues.","path":["OK Code","Title 59"],"source_url":"https://www.oklegislature.gov/OK_Statutes/CompleteTitles/os59.pdf","current_through":"2026-08-14","vintage":"open-us-law v2026.08, retrieved 2026-09-14","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T18:32:36Z","sha256":"ad911218a3ce1e1dad67c909197b37d662d51a78f3441317ac4619e046d9ef42","source_id":"us-ok","stale":false,"prev":"us-ok/okla.-stat.-tit.-59-59-1250","next":"us-ok/okla.-stat.-tit.-59-59-1251"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
