Every anesthesiologist or group of anesthesiologists, upon\n\nentering into a supervisory relationship with an anesthesiologist\n\nassistant must file with the State Board of Medical Licensure and\n\nSupervision a written protocol, to include, at a minimum, the\n\nfollowing:\n\n1. Name, address, and license number of the anesthesiologist\n\nassistant;\n\n2. Name, address, license number and federal Drug Enforcement\n\nAdministration (DEA) number of each anesthesiologist who will\n\nsupervise the anesthesiologist assistant;\n\n3. Address of the anesthesiologist assistant’s primary practice\n\nlocation and any other locations where the assistant may practice;\n\n4. The date the protocol was developed and the dates of all\n\nrevisions;\n\n5. The designation and signature of the primary supervising\n\nanesthesiologist;\n\n6. Signatures of the anesthesiologist assistant and all\n\nsupervising anesthesiologists;\n\n7. The duties and functions of the anesthesiologist assistant;\n\n8. Conditions or procedures that require the personal provision\n\nof care by an anesthesiologist; and\n\n9. The procedures to be followed in the event of an anesthetic\n\nemergency.\n\nB. The protocol must be on file with the Board prior to the\n\ntime the anesthesiologist assistant begins practice with the\n\nanesthesiologist or the anesthesiology group.\n\nC. The protocol must be updated biennially.\n\nD. Anesthesiologist assistants may perform the following duties\n\nunder the direct supervision of an anesthesiologist:\n\n1. Obtaining a comprehensive patient history and presenting the\n\nhistory to the supervising anesthesiologist;\n\n2. Pretesting and calibration of anesthesia delivery systems\n\nand monitoring, obtaining and interpreting information from the\n\nsystems and monitors;\n\n3. Assisting the anesthesiologist with implementation of\n\nmonitoring techniques;\n\n4. Establishing basic and advanced airway interventions,\n\nincluding intubations of the trachea and performing ventilatory\n\nsupport;\n\n5. Administering intermittent vasoactive drugs and starting and\n\nadjusting vasoactive infusions;\n\n6. Administering anesthetic drugs, adjuvant drugs, and\n\naccessory drugs;\n\n7. Assisting the anesthesiologist with the performance of\n\nepidural anesthetic procedures and spinal anesthetic procedures;\n\n8. Administering blood, blood products, and supportive fluids;\n\n9. Supporting life functions during anesthesia health care,\n\nincluding induction and intubation procedures, the use of\n\nappropriate mechanical supportive devices, and the management of\n\nfluid, electrolyte, and blood component balances;\n\n10. Recognizing and taking appropriate corrective action for\n\nabnormal patient responses to anesthesia, adjunctive medication or\n\nother forms of therapy;\n\n11. Participating in management of the patient while in the\n\npost-anesthesia recovery area, including the administration of\n\nsupporting fluids; and\n\n12. Placing special peripheral and central venous and arterial\n\nlines for blood sampling and monitoring as appropriate.\n\nE. The supervising anesthesiologist shall delegate only tasks\n\nand procedures to the anesthesiologist assistant which are within\n\nthe supervising physician's scope of practice. The anesthesiologist\n\nassistant may work in any setting that is within the scope of\n\npractice of the supervising anesthesiologist’s practice.\n\nF. Continuity of supervision in practice settings requires the\n\nanesthesiologist assistant to document in the anesthesia record any\n\nchange in supervisor.\n\nG.
