Between the effective date of this act and May 1, 2017, the\n\nState Board of Cosmetology and Barbering shall issue a license to\n\npractice massage therapy to any person who files a completed\n\napplication, accompanied by the required fees, and who submits\n\nsatisfactory evidence that the applicant:\n\n1. Is at least eighteen (18) years of age;\n\n2. Has one or more of the following:\n\na. documentation that the applicant has completed and\n\npassed a nationally recognized competency examination\n\nin the practice of massage therapy,\n\nb. an affidavit of at least five (5) years of work\n\nexperience in the state, or\n\nc. a certificate and transcript of completion from a\n\nmassage school with at least five hundred (500) hours\n\nof education;\n\n3. Provides proof of documentation that the applicant currently\n\nmaintains liability insurance for practice as a massage therapist;\n\nand\n\n4. Provides full disclosure to the Board of any criminal\n\nproceeding taken against the applicant including but not limited to\n\npleading guilty or nolo contendere to, or receiving a conviction\n\nfor, a felony crime that substantially relates to the practice of\n\nmassage therapy and poses a reasonable threat to public safety.\n\nB. To assist in determining the entry-level competence of an\n\napplicant who makes application for a license after May 1, 2017, the\n\nBoard may adopt rules establishing additional standards or criteria\n\nfor examination acceptance and may adopt only those examinations\n\nthat meet the standards outlined in Section 4200.8 of this title.\n\nC. 1. After May 1, 2017, except as otherwise provided in the\n\nMassage Therapy Practice Act, every person desiring to practice\n\nmassage therapy in this state shall be required to first obtain a\n\nlicense from the Board.\n\n2. After May 1, 2017, the Board may issue a license to an\n\napplicant who:\n\na. is at least eighteen (18) years of age,\n\nb. provides documentation that the applicant has\n\ncompleted the equivalent of five hundred (500) hours\n\nof formal education in massage therapy from a state-\n\nlicensed school,\n\nc. provides documentation that the applicant has passed a\n\nnationally recognized competency examination approved\n\nby the Board,\n\nd. provides proof that the applicant currently maintains\n\nliability insurance for practice as a massage\n\ntherapist, and\n\ne. provides full disclosure to the Board of any criminal\n\nproceeding taken against the applicant including\n\npleading guilty or nolo contendere to, or receiving a\n\nconviction for, a felony crime that substantially\n\nrelates to the practice of massage therapy and poses a\n\nreasonable threat to public safety.\n\nD. As used in this section:\n\n1. \"Substantially relates\" means the nature of criminal conduct\n\nfor which the person was convicted has a direct bearing on the\n\nfitness or ability to perform one or more of the duties or\n\nresponsibilities necessarily related to the occupation; and\n\n2. \"Poses a reasonable threat\" means the nature of criminal\n\nconduct for which the person was convicted involved an act or threat\n\nof harm against another and has a bearing on the fitness or ability\n\nto serve the public or work with others in the occupation.","path":["OK Code","Title 59"],"source_url":"https://www.oklegislature.gov/OK_Statutes/CompleteTitles/os59.pdf","current_through":"2026-08-14","vintage":"open-us-law v2026.08, retrieved 2026-09-14","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T18:32:36Z","sha256":"709ad3c87571b8f5c573a5747184490780b3bf61d53c332662ded7d4aea9cc5f","source_id":"us-ok","stale":false,"prev":"us-ok/okla.-stat.-tit.-59-59-4200.4","next":"us-ok/okla.-stat.-tit.-59-59-4200.6"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
