Certification or Enrollment as an Engineer Intern. The\n\nfollowing shall be considered as minimum evidence that the applicant\n\nis qualified for certification as an engineer intern:\n\n1. Satisfying the education requirements as outlined in this\n\nsection; and\n\n2. Passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering\n\nand Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.\n\nB. Licensure as a Professional Engineer. To be eligible for\n\nlicensure as a professional engineer, an individual shall meet all\n\nof the following requirements:\n\n1. Satisfy the education and experience criteria set forth in\n\nthis section;\n\n2. Pass the applicable examinations set forth in this section;\n\nand\n\n3. Submit references acceptable to the Board as described in\n\nBoard rules.\n\nC. Initial Licensure as a Professional Engineer. An applicant\n\nwho presents evidence of meeting the applicable education,\n\nexamination and experience requirements pursuant to this subsection\n\nshall be eligible for licensure as a professional engineer.\n\n1. Education Requirements. An individual seeking licensure as\n\na professional engineer shall possess one or more of the following\n\neducation qualifications:\n\na. a degree in engineering from an EAC/ABET-accredited\n\nbachelor's program, or the equivalent,\n\nb. a degree in a Board-approved related science\n\nbachelor's program,\n\nc. a degree in engineering from an EAC/ABET- or\n\nETAC/ABET-accredited master's program from an\n\ninstitution that offers an EAC/ABET- or ETAC/ABET-\n\naccredited bachelor's program in the same or similar\n\ndiscipline of engineering,\n\nd. a degree in engineering from a non-EAC/ABET- or\n\nETAC/ABET-accredited bachelor's, master's, or\n\ndoctorate program. This individual's education shall\n\nbe evaluated by the NCEES Credentials Evaluation\n\nservice or other Board-approved evaluation service\n\nbased upon the criteria set forth in the NCEES\n\nEngineering Education Standard,\n\ne. a master's degree in engineering from an EAC/M-ABET-\n\naccredited program, or\n\nf. an earned doctoral degree in engineering acceptable to\n\nthe Board.\n\n2. Examination Requirements. An individual seeking licensure\n\nas a professional engineer shall take and pass the NCEES\n\nFundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination and the NCEES\n\nPrinciples and Practice of Engineering (PE) examination as follows:\n\na. the FE examination may be taken at any time according\n\nto NCEES examination policies and procedures, but is\n\nrecommended to be taken during the student's senior\n\nyear of college,\n\nb. the PE examination may be taken by a graduate of an\n\napproved degree program pursuant to this section, or\n\nc. the Board may waive the FE examination requirement for\n\nthe issuance of a license if the applicant possesses,\n\nat a minimum, fifteen (15) years of progressive\n\nexperience on engineering projects which indicate to\n\nthe Board the applicant may be competent to practice\n\nengineering. The Board shall evaluate all elements of\n\nthe application, according to Board rules, to assess\n\nwaiver requests.\n\n3. Experience Requirements. An individual seeking licensure as\n\na professional engineer shall present evidence of a specific record\n\nof engineering experience following the conferment of the qualifying\n\ndegree as described in paragraph 1 of this subsection. This\n\nexperience should be progressive and of a grade and character that\n\nindicate to the Board that the applicant may be competent to\n\npractice engineering. The following educational criteria may apply\n\nas a substitute to the length of experience set forth in this\n\nsection:\n\na. an individual who qualifies pursuant to subparagraph a\n\nof paragraph 1 of this subsection: four (4) years of\n\nexperience after the bachelor's degree is conferred,\n\nb. an individual who qualifies pursuant to subparagraph b\n\nof paragraph 1 of this subsection: six (6) years of\nng. The following educational criteria may apply\n\nas a substitute to the length of experience set forth in this\n\nsection:\n\na. an individual who qualifies pursuant to subparagraph a\n\nof paragraph 1 of this subsection: four (4) years of\n\nexperience after the bachelor's degree is conferred,\n\nb. an individual who qualifies pursuant to subparagraph b\n\nof paragraph 1 of this subsection: six (6) years of\n\nexperience after the bachelor's degree is conferred,\n\nc. an individual who qualifies pursuant to subparagraph c\n\nor e of paragraph 1 of this subsection: three (3)\n\nyears of experience after the master's degree is\n\nconferred, or\n\nd. an individual who qualifies pursuant to subparagraph f\n\nof paragraph 1 of this subsection: two (2) years of\n\nexperience after the doctoral degree is conferred.\n\nA graduate degree that is used to satisfy education requirements\n\ncannot be applied for experience credit toward licensure. To be\n\neligible for experience credit, graduate degrees shall be relevant\n\nto the applicant's area of professional practice. Experience credit\n\nfor a graduate degree cannot be earned concurrently with work\n\nexperience credit.\n\n4. Partial experience credit may be awarded for experience\n\nearned prior to conferment of the qualifying degree, at the\n\ndiscretion of the Board, as described in Board rules. In no case\n\nshall the experience credit exceed one-half (1/2) of that required\n\nfor approved qualifying experience. The experience credit shall not\n\nbe claimed if the applicant is also claiming the experience time as\n\nexperience credit for a cooperative education program.\n\n5. EAC/ABET-accredited engineering cooperative education\n\nprograms may be considered as experience credit earned prior to the\n\nqualifying degree if the program meets the experience requirement\n\npursuant to this subsection. Otherwise, a maximum of six (6) months\n\nexperience may be claimed. Experience credit for a cooperative\n\neducation program shall not be claimed if the applicant also claims\n\nthe experience time as experience credit earned prior to the degree.\n\nD. Comity Licensure for a Professional Engineer. The following\n\nshall be considered as minimum evidence satisfactory to the Board\n\nthat the applicant is qualified for licensure by comity as a\n\nprofessional engineer:\n\n1. An individual holding a license to engage in the practice of\n\nengineering issued by a proper authority of any state, jurisdiction,\n\nor foreign country, based on requirements that do not conflict with\n\nthe provisions of this act, and possessing credentials that are, in\n\nthe judgment of the Board, of a standard not lower than that\n\nspecified in the applicable licensure act in effect in Oklahoma at\n\nthe time such license was issued may, upon application, be licensed\n\nwithout further examination except as required to examine the\n\napplicant's knowledge of statutes, rules, and other requirements\n\nunique to this state. If the requirements that were met were of a\n\nstandard lower than that specified in the applicable licensure act\n\nin effect in this state at the time such license was issued but, in\n\nthe judgment of the Board, the standard was a reasonable standard at\n\nthe time the original license was issued, the individual may, upon\n\napplication, be considered by the Board according to the provisions\n\nin the Board rules; or\n\n2. An individual holding an active NCEES Record whose\n\nqualifications, as evidenced by the NCEES Record, meet the\n\nrequirements of this act may, upon application, be licensed without\n\nfurther examination except as required to examine the applicant's\n\nknowledge of statutes, rules, and other requirements unique to\n\nOklahoma.","path":["OK Code","Title 59"],"source_url":"https://www.oklegislature.gov/OK_Statutes/CompleteTitles/os59.pdf","current_through":"2026-08-14","vintage":"open-us-law v2026.08, retrieved 2026-09-14","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T18:32:36Z","sha256":"3e30726a5522f5d445870a11b98b7a80cda8e095ce094592186d9a43a129d3ad","source_id":"us-ok","stale":false,"prev":"us-ok/okla.-stat.-tit.-59-59-475.11","next":"us-ok/okla.-stat.-tit.-59-59-475.12b"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
