Stat. tit. 59, § 59-889.1","heading":"Definitions","body":"As used in the Music Therapy Practice Act:\n\n1. \"Board\" means the State Board of Medical Licensure and\n\nSupervision;\n\n2. \"Board-certified music therapist\" means an individual who\n\nhas completed the education and clinical training requirements\n\nestablished by the American Music Therapy Association, and who holds\n\ncurrent board certification from the Certification Board for Music\n\nTherapists;\n\n3. \"Committee\" means the Music Therapy Committee;\n\n4. \"Licensed music therapist\" means a person licensed to\n\npractice music therapy in the State of Oklahoma;\n\n5. \"Music therapy\" means the clinical and evidence-based use of\n\nmusic interventions to accomplish individualized goals for people of\n\nall ages and ability levels within a therapeutic relationship\n\nbetween a patient and a practitioner who is licensed pursuant to the\n\nMusic Therapy Practice Act; and\n\n6. \"Practice of music therapy\" includes the development of\n\nindividualized music therapy treatment plans specific to the needs\n\nand strengths of the client who may be seen individually or in\n\ngroups. The goals, objectives and potential strategies of the music\n\ntherapy services are appropriate for the client and setting. The\n\nmusic therapy interventions may include music improvisation,\n\nreceptive music listening, song writing, lyric discussion, music and\n\nimagery, singing, music performance, learning through music, music\n\ncombined with other arts, music-assisted relaxation, music-based\n\npatient education, electronic music technology, adapted music\n\nintervention and movement to music. The practice of music therapy\n\ndoes not include the diagnosis or assessment of any physical, mental\n\nor communication disorder. This term may include:\n\na. accepting referrals for music therapy services from\n\nmedical, developmental, mental health or education\n\nprofessionals, family members, clients, caregivers or\n\nothers involved and authorized with provision of\n\nclient services. Before providing music therapy\n\nservices to a client for an identified clinical or\n\ndevelopmental need, the licensee collaborates, as\n\napplicable, with the primary care provider(s) to\n\nreview the client's diagnosis, treatment needs and\n\ntreatment plan. During the provision of music therapy\n\nservices to a client the licensee collaborates, as\n\napplicable, with the client's treatment team,\n\nb. conducting a music therapy assessment of a client to\n\ndetermine if treatment is indicated. If treatment is\n\nindicated, the licensee collects systematic,\n\ncomprehensive and accurate information to determine\n\nthe appropriateness and type of music therapy services\n\nto provide for the client,\n\nc. developing an individualized music therapy treatment\n\nplan for the client that is based upon the results of\n\nthe music therapy assessment. The music therapy\n\ntreatment plan includes individualized goals and\n\nobjectives that focus on the assessed needs and\n\nstrengths of the client and specify music therapy\n\napproaches and interventions to be used to address\n\nthese goals and objectives,\n\nd. implementing an individualized music therapy treatment\n\nplan that is consistent with any other developmental,\n\nrehabilitative, habilitative, medical, mental health,\n\npreventive, wellness care or educational services\n\nbeing provided to the client,\n\ne. evaluating the client's response to music therapy and\n\nthe music therapy treatment plan, documenting change\n\nand progress and suggesting modifications, as\n\nappropriate,\n\nf. developing a plan for determining when the provision\n\nof music therapy services is no longer needed in\n\ncollaboration with the client, physician or other\n\nprovider of health care or education of the client,\n\nfamily members of the client, and any other\n\nappropriate person upon whom the client relies for\n\nsupport,\n\ng. minimizing any barriers to ensure that the client\n\nreceives music therapy services in the least\n\nrestrictive environment,\n\nh. collaborating with and educating the client and the\neded in\n\ncollaboration with the client, physician or other\n\nprovider of health care or education of the client,\n\nfamily members of the client, and any other\n\nappropriate person upon whom the client relies for\n\nsupport,\n\ng. minimizing any barriers to ensure that the client\n\nreceives music therapy services in the least\n\nrestrictive environment,\n\nh. collaborating with and educating the client and the\n\nfamily or caregiver of the client, or any other\n\nappropriate person regarding the needs of the client\n\nthat are being addressed in music therapy and the\n\nmanner in which the music therapy treatment addresses\n\nthose needs, and\n\ni. utilizing appropriate knowledge and skills to inform\n\npractice including use of research, reasoning and\n\nproblem-solving skills to determine appropriate\n\nactions in the context of each specific clinical\n\nsetting.","path":["OK Code","Title 59"],"source_url":"https://www.oklegislature.gov/OK_Statutes/CompleteTitles/os59.pdf","current_through":"2026-08-14","vintage":"open-us-law v2026.08, retrieved 2026-09-14","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T18:32:36Z","sha256":"204eac2013535407212a1152a972115b63881f633a2ea20f88f81b506d64d2a4","source_id":"us-ok","stale":false,"prev":"us-ok/okla.-stat.-tit.-59-59-889","next":"us-ok/okla.-stat.-tit.-59-59-889.10"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
